I am in a confusing situation right now and was hoping you guys could help me out. I am a senior in college right now and I have applied to many allopathic schools, but unfortunately I have not gotten into any of them. I didn't do too well on my MCATs and I took them last April and August. Right now, I have two options. I can go to an osteopathic school because I have been accepted there or I could reapply next year to get into an allopathic. If I did reapply, do you think it would be a good idea to take the MCAT again for the third time? What do you suggest I do?

I am in the same situation as you. However, I recently decided to attend an osteopathic school simply because I know I want to be a doctor and I don't want to wait a year (or longer) to get started, and the osteopathic route will allow me to do that. It's really a matter of how important it is to you to have "MD" after your name. If you decide to go to the allopathic route, I would say that taking the MCAT again is a good idea. If that was your weakness and you think that's what's holding you back, spend your summer with your MCAT books, and improve on the MCAT. Good luck making your decision. Trust me-i know its a hard one.

I doubt anyone can give you useful advice without more details. I mean, numerically (GPA, MCAT) and in terms of ECs, were you "close" to what is deemed "competitive" for the lower tier allopathic schools? Is it just the MCAT, and how bad were they? Bottom line is that if you are within striking distance of allopathic, and if that's where you wanted to be (which I gather based on your need to post) then it might pay to retry again after a new set of scores (or if GPA is an issue, a postbac or SM). The average age of matriculants will still probably be older than you will be a year or two later. Otherwise, go with the DO.
