I have accepted a position in the fall class at Kansas State. Iowa State called me a few days ago and took me off their waiting list. Anyone have an opinion either way? I need to make a decision and am having trouble because Iowa didn't do interviews and I haven't seen the school. 😱

I think that, while there is a ranking for vet schools, you'll get a damn good education anywhere. So I would chose based on the cost of attendance, and the city in which the school is located, how convenient it is for you, closeness to family, night life etc. Or if you plan to specialize, make sure that the school has those specialists (ie. UF doesn't have an oncologist or an emergency medicine program, but we have great ophtho, cardio and surgeons.)

Also consider the curriculums. Are they the same? Do they differ? How? Some differences I have noticed between schools (I did not look into Iowa so cannot help there): Look at how long the anatomy course is. Some do it all in one semester, some in one year, a couple 2 years....what would you prefer, do it quick or take a longer time. When do each of the two schools start clinics? Kansas I believe is still starting in fourth year.
How did you like the atmosphere at K-state? (I remember people were very friendly when I was there). Did you get to speak to current students? Did they seem happy? Can you afford to take a trip to Iowa and do a tour (I am sure they would let you if it helps you make a decicion). I believe that both places are small towns so there should not be too much difference there.

And last but not least....Did you rank your choices prior to having any choices? What was your reasoning for that? Go with your gut feelings, mine did not fail me.

Good luck and congrats 🙂

One thing to mention is that K-state is great for exotics if you have any interest in that.

Also, are you going by youself, or is someone else comming with you. If there is someone else comming with you what is the job market in each area like for that person?

okay I think I am done for now 🙄

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I need to let Iowa know by the 20th so there's no time to take a trip and check out the facilities. Tuition is another factor since Iowa State contracts with NJ. However, NJ is being a little slow on letting them know how many contract seats they are sponsoring this year and I won't know if I have one until after the deadline to accept. I really am still at a total loss, but thanks for your advice and I will re-evaluate. I would love to hear from someone who has been to Iowa and seen the facilities. K state didn't have some of the newest equipment (like an equine treadmill) and I was wondering how up to date the equipment and programs are at Iowa.
