Trying to make a decision here.

been doing prepharmacy courses for a year and half . And I have 5 core pre-courses to go by now..organic 1 and 2, bio 2, phys 2, anatomy 2. and also 3 general ed courses. I tried to put them in 2 semesters. but the class scheldule doest allow me to do so.... i have to stretch my scheldule to 3 semesters. just wondering if i should go for a degree and apply for pharm schools after 3 semesters or I should get my pre-pharm done and find some pharm experience in my streched scheldule.

Or the question should be : How important is a degree in terms of admission?
interested schools: UIC, MIDWESTERN, SIUE, USN

I dont know much about those specific schools, but i do know that although most schools dont require a bs prior to entering the pharmd program, you will be considered a more competent applicant. Most schools will pick ppl who have a degree over those who dont. However, you should still try to get pharmacy experience since that is a major plus in your application. I dont know if that helps, or not, but i hope it does.

Well, I have to choose between degree and experience at this point...anyone else help me ?

Just got reply from midwestern

they said it doesnt matter. I guess i should trust them then..

In my opinion (only what I think), I think you should choose experience over degree. It shows them that you have an idea of what the field is like and that you can manage your time by balancing school and work. Plus if you work in a pharmacy, you can get a LOR from a pharmacist. And in the unlikely event that you don't get in, you can get your degree later.

Thank you very much!!! So confirming.. And would you say that hospitals are better places for me? I mean comparing to drug stores

I don't know, it depends on what you like to do. I think it's slightly easier to get a job in retail. I only worked at a long term care pharmacy so I can't give you a concrete idea of what it's like working in a hospital vs retail. I have friends who prefer retail while others prefer hospitals. But don't limit yourself to those 2 places. Look around in your area and see what other options you have.

Yes, retail is easier to get a job because the hospital wants a person that already has experience. I had a job offer at safeway for full time but I cant work that much so I went ahead and applied for two hospitals and both never contacted me again.

Also, I agree that everyone needs to be open and apply everywhere not only in retail or hospital. There are a lot of opportunities like working in a nuclear, nutritional, online pharmacy....etc....
