I was wondering how easy it is to transfer to Cali from NY after 1 yr at a categorical (so transfer during CBY) or even CA-1 yr due to personal reasons. Can your program director just call up and find a spot?

Also lets say I go unmatched and only get a med prelim - how much more competitive is it to apply as a PGY 1 to anes? Would I have to go through the match or can I just call up programs and do it without going through ERAS?

And lastly, am I better off taking a yr off and trying to reapply to Cali programs or is taking a yr off not good?

I think current US med school grads are the only ones that "have" to go through the match (correct me if I'm wrong). So I would check the "open positions" section or have the help of your PD/faculty let you know of any open positions, etc. Personally, I'm not sure if taking a year off is in your best interest but I don't know exactly what your "personal reasons" are, so it depends how serious things are obviously...
