Hi guys,

So i have been doing a lot of research and would like you guys to help me decide which schools I should apply to from the list that i have or which other schools i sould add...
1) canadian student
2) overall gpa: 3.26 & sci gpa: 2.96
3) DAT scores: 19TS/19AA/20PAT
4) lots of shadowing; volunteered at dental labs & hospital; participated a great deal in my community, as well as, on-campus organizations
5) planning to take upper-level science courses in summer and fall of 2009 to boost gpa
6) submitting application by June 15

List of schools:
BU
NYU
USC
TEMPLE
LOUISVILLE
VCU
HOWARD
MEHARRY
TUFTS
MARYLAND

I am not a URM so should i even waste my time and money to apply to Howard & Meharry?? Also, I wanted to add Columbia to the list, but am hesitant.... Any other schools I may have a shot at?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance 🙂

Retake DAT to offset your subpar GPA.

i understand that my gpa is on the lower end that is why i am taking upper level sci courses, as well as, retaking the DAT. Keeping that in mind, I would like to know if there are ppl or know of others in a similar situation as me and want their personal opinions on which specific schools they applied to... im extremely anxious and willing to do whatever it is to better my chances. Thanx

I currently have a 3.4 cumul. gpa and a 3.3 science gpa. I'm a bio major and I have completed a few upper level courses. I am going to be in my senior year this fall and I plan on loading up on my bio major requirements to graduate. I haven't taken my DAT yet; I have it scheduled for June 8th but I might postpone it until July if I'm not ready. Here are a list of schools that I'm having my scores sent to: (random order)

1) UF
2) NOVA
3) BU
4) NYU
5) Columbia
6) Case
7) Temple
8) Marquette
9) Tufts
10) UPenn

look over the stats doc toothache posted. if you were in the u.s. your list would be great, and most of those still look ok but some don't. louisville had 204 international applicants in 08 and accepted 0 of them. these don't have applicants listed but vcu, temple, and meharry also don't seem to be big on taking canadian students, and you could probably replace them with better choices. but the rest seem ok.

I swear I'm not trying to be rude or a jerk or anything, but isn't that A LOT EASIER to plan than it is to do? And considering your sub-3 science GPA, do you think you've made whatever changes you need to make to be able to ace those science courses? Like I said, not trying to be mean, just trying to understand or maybe even provide a little perspective. Sorry in advance if this seems a bit abrasive.

You go to a college no one has ever heard of so it might be different...but if you go to a competitive college, the intro science classes are actually the hardest classes to get As in because they are weed out classes. The upper level science classes are harder in regards to the difficulty of the materials but they are easier to get As in.

OP, you should really retake the DAT. Retaking the DAT is more important than applying on the June 1st.

Where did you go? I really want to go there.

Less than 10% receive A's in upper level courses at my institution. However, the weeder classes are somewhat difficult that leave many in the dust.

That reminds me, are you paying for grade inflation?

i totally agree with you because it is my 1st year sci courses that are bringing my gpa down and not to mention the class sizes at university of toronto are enormous. Bio 1st year in my morning class alone had 1000-1500 students and the same class was offered in the evening so again around the same number of students. So, by competing with approximately 3000 students in the same class, not only did i feel like just a number but it was really tough to ask questions or even approach the professor. ohhhh and not to mention, i have had my marks bell curved down at this uni because i heard that is how they keep their standard... A lot of ppl dropped out after 1st year and 2nd year bio had ~500 students... When i took upper level sci courses in 3rd and 4th year i managed to get all As and showed a huge upward trend in the last 2 years (3rd yr gpa=3.6 and 4th yr gpa=3.7). So, im pretty confident that i can raise my gpa by taking upper level sci courses...

n definitely i am planning to retake the dat but at the same time feel that b/c of my low gpa i should apply early...
