Does anyone have any advice on what science classes dental schools like to see? I only have O Chem II left to take next semester. I am also taking a biology internship as a 6 credit class, where I will be shadowing for 240 hours over the course of the semester. I want to take 1 more science class in order to get my sGPA up. Any advice? Also, this might be a stupid question, but does political science or computer science class count as a science?

someone once told me i haz pistachio-shelling down to a science... maybe find a hidden talent of yours that can be classified as a science too?

Wow... or you could answer the question rather then waste your time being a smart a@@ and making me waste my time reading your response. I only ask because I have a twin who interviewd at various PT schools and they counted those classes as science classes.

poli sci and computer science are considered non science .. and I would recommend taking biochem, anatomy or microbio.

I have taken all of those already. I am currently enrolled in a neurobiology class, but I dont want to risk getting a B. Im looking for anything else.

Do Physiology for sure, it is one of the most important classes and it's also a first year (D1) class. I didn't take it in undergrad and I'm sure I'll regret it very soon when I start in the fall.

Another good one is Genetics...my favorite undergrad Bio class by far. It was VERY interesting.

Ha I just took phys and genetics this past semester. I got a B in genetics, and probably the same in phys. I was looking at a class called molecular embryology.

Yeah, that sounds like a pretty cool (challenging) class for sure. Looks like you've already taken all the "important" classes. I would just pick the one being offered that interests you the most.

What classes are being offered this semester at your school that you haven't taken?

Take an easy Math class. Those count as part of your science GPA......

Also, some schools have departments courses that are part of the Science Department. These "SCIENCE 101, etc" classes are usually easier versions of Biology department classes. Their designed for non majors but still count as science classes for GPA purposes....

Wouldn't taking a lower level science class look bad when applying?

Yes, it would. Take an upper-level science class and do well. You never answered my question about what all upper-levels are available for you to take next semester. I know you said something about molecular embryo, but what else is available that you haven't taken?

molecular embryo, histo, patho, pharm, biochem, comparative, developmental, immuno, endocrinology, advanced cell, teratology, advanced phys or anatomy, gross anatomy, neuro, zoology, animal behavior. Then you have the common ones-microbio ,genetics, molecular, virology,? etc. anyways thats just the bio department....im sure theres lots of upper level chem and physics courses as well. All go into your bcp. get to work!!!

Agreed!!!

To the OP...find something that correlates closely to dentistry if at all possible. If you've made it this far, I'm quite sure you can figure out which classes are more important than others. Good luck!

I am a natural science major/chem minor. If I take one more bio class, I will have a bio minor. The bio classes my university is offering is the following: Basic biology, general biology II, cell biology, principles of bio II, emerging diseases, persp in cell and molecular bio, human anatomy, human physiology, human physiology and anatomy, botany, general zoology, general microbiology, principles of microbiology, ornithology, genetics, evolution, intro to toxicology and risk assess, limnology, immunology, neurobiology, adv tech in bio, population and community ecology. I have already taken principles of bio I and II, genetics, human anatomy, human physiology, general microbiology. (the professors that teach neuro and immunology are EXTREMELY hard).

take molecular or immuno (even if its hard!-just kiss a ss and make your professor like you hahaaa)

Which molecular? When I say this teacher is hard, she is HARD. She also teaches micro and her class averages are always failing. She also refuses to curve.

Of all those, I would take cell biology. I don't know if that same lady teaches it, but if you haven't taken it yet...I would take it in a heart beat. That was another favorite of mine. It was challenging (not going to lie), but I learned SO MUCH in that class. If you're really good with Chem (as is my case)...that class is a little easier. That's just my perspective though. Of all the classes you've listed, and taking the ones you've had already into consideration...I would say Cell Bio is the best one for you.

Cell bio is considered a low level science class at my university (BIO 105). I was thinking biochemistry II (BIO 302), because I have already taken the upper level Biochemistry (Biochemistry 351), and pulled a B.

Or that too...I didn't know there was a Biochem II...guess I didn't read your post clearly enough. Yeah man, I would recommend that one over most all other courses. Biochem is one of the first obstacles you'll run into in dental school (as a D1) so I would go with that one for sure. You can't know enough Biochem, Anatomy, or Physiology.

I agree. I didnt post the Biochem because I only posted the biology classes. I guess I'll end up taking biochem, in seeing that it is still considered an upper-level bio course. I had originally scheduled for a neurobiology class (bio 477), but there is no way I could get an A in that class. The professor is too smart for his own good, and he is also married to the extremely tough immuno/micro professor ha.

They LOVE to see the following:
-Biochem
-Biology
-Physiology
-Anatomy

...and there's a good reason for it! You'll be bombarded with information related to these classes during the 1st two years of dental school. So, the more exposure you have to these topics, the easier the 1st two years will be!

Does it matter what level biochem? I have already taken an upper level (biochem 351), and I plan on taking biochem 302 next semester, if I can get in it.

Nah! As long as you had some Biochem classes, you should be fine! A piece of advice though! Don't overdo it by taking a biochem class you wouldn't be able to handle, so it'll mess up your GPA.

I am taking O Chem II and a biology internship class worth 6 credits and counts as an upper level bio class. I have to shadow 240 hours over the course of the semester and do weekly written assignments, case studies, etc. I want one more class to try and get my sGPA up.

I've decided to take another biochemistry class. Thanks for the input everyone!
