So, here's my situation: I'm entering a post-bacc program in the spring next year and I think I could squeeze in an extra course for the first semester. I have my Bachelor's in a non-science field and I don't need any general education/social sciences/humanities/etc credits. However, a lot of the electives that seem useful (biochem, microbiology, etc.) have pre-requisites that I don't have. (I'll be finished with General Chemistry I and Calculus I by December). Anyone have any suggestions as to any useful electives, preferably those without too many pre-reqs?

I was looking at Human Anatomy and Physiology. At my school (Temple), it's in the Kinesiology department, though. Do you think that would be useful? Or if it would count for the "Anatomy and Physiology" course that some schools list as a pre-req?

By the way, I'm a long-time lurker at SDN, but just recently made an account. Nice to meet you all! 🙂

Since nobody else has responded, I'll give it a shot. I don't know about whether any particular schools will take A&P from a Kinesiology dept. Probably at least some will. You might just have to contact a few schools and hear what they say. Does your bio department have separate anatomy and physiology courses? If so, that may be the desired route.

In my opinion, you will not regret any of the following courses: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochem, Genetics, Cell Biology, and Medical Terminology. Depending on your school, you can probably get into anatomy and med term without any (or many) pre-reqs. The others will all probably require some. If your school offers a physical chemistry for health-related majors, that would be useful for the kinetics stuff and a few other topics. If not, the typical major's p-chem is usually pretty tough. Either way, you will probably need Chem 2 first.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, Rouelle! I'm actually taking Medical Terminology right now. I looked into the courses you suggested, but they all have pre-reqs that I haven't taken. There are separate Mammalian Physiology and Mammalian Anatomy courses in the Bio department, but I don't have the pre-reqs for them, either. Guess my best bet is to inquire at some schools. Thanks again for the suggestions, I really wanna take Biochem, hopefully next year I can!

Biochem and Medicinal Chemistry for sure 🙂

Immunology, Cell Biology, Genetics.

👍

Microbio if you can take it.

When you see Biochem on the list of classes, is it:

  1. an intro course?
  2. biochem for majors?
Also, is it available as Biochem 1 and then Biochem 2? If there are two semesters, I'd recommend it.

Yup, there seem to be two semesters, Biochem 1 and 2. Organic Chemistry 2 is a pre-req though, so I won't have the opportunity to take it for a while 🙁 What do you mean by "intro course"? It's the same course Biochem majors are required to take.

Some schools offer "intro to biochem" for people who are not biochem majors.

OP said he's finishing gen chem 1 in december, i doubt Temple will let him/her take pchem or biochem before at least organic 1
