I did EM/IM from 96 - 01. Some things may have changed, but here's my $0.02.

1. IM program is strong. Eric Scher is the PD and is very good.
2. All IM grads that wanted to do a fellowship usually got their top 3 picks. It has a strong rep in GI, Cards, Nephrology, Pulm.
3. GI is very strong. Vibrant hepatology program with a very strong transplant center, tons of procedures, the attendings are easy to work with and are doing cutting edge GI.
4. You are just on the edge of downtown Detroit. The hospital gets something renovated each year. It is much prettier now than when I was there. But it is in Detroit. The neighborhood it's in is bad. The patient population is a mix of 70% Detroit 30% suburbs (being referred to the "ivory tower"). You'll see TONS of pathology. I've never seen as many sick people in my career. It really was a fun time.
5. Just like any inner city hospital. The IM program is big. There is a better mix now of US and FMG grads. The FMG grads were fantastic when I was there. Many were already specialists from their country of origin. All were very strong.

The suburbs of Detroit, about a 1/2 hour drive, are very nice. A little pricey, but very nice.

I have nothing but fond memories of Ford.

Good luck,
Kyle

I have many friends doing residency at Henry Ford Hospital. And they love it! A great diversity of patients, residents, and attendings.
