Anyone have any opinions about the Henry Ford pain fellowship?

I have not interviewed there, only hear about the program through the community: they do a lot of procedures and zero clinic. Work hard. Have one main pain attending. Thats about all I know.

It's in Detroit. That's all you need to know to make a decision.

Is the fellowship itself good? Detroit sucks, but sucks less if you are from there.

Anyone else care to chime in? Thanks so much yall.

I interviewed there last year so Im a little foggy on specifics.

The clinics are in the hospital and are fairly new. 10 bed waiting room and two flouro suites. 3-4 fellows. One primary pain attending who is PMR/anesthesia fellowship trained and 5-6 other anesthesia pain boarded attendings.

The procedure volume is great. The acute pain service(and call) was VERY busy. Teaching seemed excellent. Fellows were happy. There is subsidized housing across the street. They "pimped" me quite a bit during the interview. PD was very personable.

Overall I thought the program was great. If I had wanted to stay in Michigan it would have been a reasonable choice.

Best of luck.

The resident I was shadowing yesterday is applying to HF's pain fellowship. All I really know is that it's a very busy pain clinic there.

I have been trying to get a hold of the secretary for a few weeks now, both emails and phone calls with no response. Do they intentionally try to make it hard?

I know I sound harsh, but Henry Ford is in Detroit. That's how Detroit works, I'm sorry to say. 🙁

Detroit is not as bad as everyone thinks it is. I have lived there for 10yrs before moving to my current city for residency. For me, it was no different than my current city except that winters are harsh and there is a high incidence of seasonal depression.

I lived in Bloomfield Hills, which is a good suburb. Living in Detroit itself is a different story on the other hand. Henry Ford, unfortunately, is on the border of the Detroit city. I would be extremely cautious when the sun goes down inside the city.

I don't have much to offer about the program itself and I have no idea about it.

Dude you lived in Bloomfield Hills, which is the richest suburb in Michigan, in fact one of the richest suburbs in the country! Its about as unlike Detroit as you can get!

Henry Ford is in Detroit city limits. Detroit is WORSE than most people think it is!

I used to live at Telegraph and Long lake. I still go there frequently as all my family is from there.

Going back to Henry Ford, one shouldn't think about how bad of an area the hospital is in. The reason I say this is because 99% of residents/fellows live in one of the suburbs (like Troy, Sterling hts, Auburn hills,Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, Livonia). The commute to Henry Ford from any of these suburbs is about 20min. I have two uncles who have been commuting from Bloomfield hills to their respective hospitals right smack in the middle of Detroit for the last 30yrs. It takes about 30min for them.

FYI, HF provides on-campus apartments which are very secure and were really nice when I visited a friend there 10yrs ago.

I know Henry Ford is a very strong hospital and has good reputation in Michigan. Most residency programs at Henry Ford are very picky in their candidate selections. I'm, however, unsure of its pain fellowship reputation.
