So, all my friends and family are telling me to go to UPenn, but I really like the clinical aspects of Marquette. I have debated the merits of both schools over and over and am looking for some insight from you.

Basically my decision comes down to this: do I choose UPenn with more competitive classmates and all the benefits of an Ivy League school or do I choose Marquette where the class size is significantly smaller, the clinics and classrooms significantly nicer (own chair, digital radiography, don't have to duck to avoid hitting ceiling pipes, etc).

I really like Marquette, but people keep telling me UPenn is the better school.

UPenn is the way to go! 😉

It seems to me that you really like Marquette: if I were in your shoes, that's where I'd go.

You'll be doomed in Wisconsin winter by freaking freezing cold weather!😉
But still I think you have to go where your heart tells you! Marquette!
Good Luck!

If you like Marquette better, then go there. The better school is the one that fits YOU the best. You should respect the opinions of your friends and family, but ultimately, you are the one that will be spending 4 years there, not them. Good luck with your decision! 😀

i think it kind of depends on whether or not you want to specialize. penn will give you the edge over marquette for that. now before people jump on me for saying that, im not saying you cant specialize if you go to marquette, but it might slightly lower your odds. but, if you know you want to do general dentistry, save the money and go to marquette, where you seem to think youll have a more enjoyable experience.

I seriously doubt going to school X could lower your odds of getting into a specialty, though going to Penn MIGHT raise them. I think the only reason more people from any school get more specialty acceptances is because those schools tend to accept people with higher grades/DAT, and people with higher grades/DAT are more likely to get into a residency (but I guess that's not really raising your chance, is it). Go to where you want to live and/or wherever is cheaper. If you could get a residency at Penn, you can get one at Marquette.

Don't make a decision based on your family and friend's preferences.. if you end up going to THEIR favorite school and you hate it, then you'll eventually start blaming THEM for your decision. If you do happen to choose UPenn, hopefully it works out for you and that you are happy there.

Talk it over with the people who are most important to you. Tell them how much you want to go to Marquette, what you think about it, etc. Maybe they just don't know enough about Marquette yet.

I followed my gut, and I've had no regrets about my gut decisions thus far. It's your life, so do what you want with it.

Go with your gut, and don't look back or regret your decision. Either way, you'll be a competent dentist. What really matters is what you make of your education. Best of luck to you! 🙂

BTW Only you know what is right for you. I'm sure you value your family's/friends' opinions, but what it ultimately comes down to is how you feel.

I never miss an opportunity to peer pressure...Go to Marquette. Why?...because I said so.

...and I hear they don't have traditional classes. No classes is the way to go for dental school! Never miss an opportunity to have it slightly easier.

i saw your post in another thread. i think you should go to the one that will be more comfortable to live in.
