It's just a little more than a week away 'til your boy, Matt Hughes, takes on Royce Gracie at UFC 60! You gonna get it on PPV? I'm getting really pumped about it...the fight is the day after my last final, so I'll definitely have to find a bar to watch it in.

I've been spending my breaks from studying physiology watching Matt Hughes clips on Google video. This is my favorite: Matt Hughes gets busted.

Anyone care to make any predictions? I hope Hughes beats the piss out of Gracie, but I don't think you can ever count Royce out of a fight, so I don't know if I'd be confident enough to put money down on this one.

Major bummer news....The ONLY FIGHT I really wanted to get on PPV...and I'm flying to Florida that day...my sister is getting married...

I'm hoping Hughes can take him out.

I don't know... that Barzilian Jujitsu is pretty bad as s- The Gracie family practicaly invented the style. Matt on the other hand is solid all the way around. Loved the fight against George St. Pierre, which proved that Matt can throw submisions of his own. If Matt stays away from Gracies submisisons and does his regular ground and pound... I think he may be able to take the fight. Either way it's going to be a super sweet clash of the titans. :meanie:

And.... Gracie clearly has height and reach advantage :scared:

Has anyone seen the fight where Kimo was turned into a whimpering girl by Royce? I think MH is bad as hell, but if you look at the fight history, Royce definitely has tken out stiffer competition. Either way, this is definitely the fight of the century.

Yeah.. that was a good one. Royce going for kimo's pony tail and taping him out with a crazy pony tail arm bar.
Royce has even been victorious over Ken Shamrock with submisions! Matt has something coming at him that is fierce.
It's going to be great...

I think Hughes is definitely the better all-around fighter, but like I said, you can't ever count a Gracie out.

I don't think Hughes will try to ground and pound with Gracie, because if he stays on his feet he can avoid the almost inevitable submission that you get when you grapple with a squirelly guy like Gracie. Even though Royce has the height and reach advantage, his striking skills are severely lacking compared to Hughes. BJJ is all about getting your opponent to the ground and THEN methodically working them into a submission, so they don't really concentrate on striking.

The stuff Gracie did back in the early days of the UFC was unbelieveable. Fighting guys almost twice his size, and doing 3-4 fights a night?! 😱 You couldn't do that in today's UFC. But back in the day, the fights were more about pitting a fighting style against another fighting style, whereas today the fight is more about the contest between individual fighters, since everyone practices truly "mixed" martial arts.

One thing that amazes me about those old Gracie fights was how visciously he applied his submissions, not letting up until the ref peeled him off his opponent. Nowadays, as soon as someone taps out, you let go immediately. I think Gracie used to be so wicked with his submissions because in his first fight with Ken Shamrock there was some question as to whether Ken actually tapped out or not.

Jet, that sucks...you should make your sister order the fight wherever they're having the reception! The wives and girlfriends can dance with each other while all the guys are huddled around the TV. Nothing like celebrating two lives becoming one by watching two guys beat each other to a pulp! :meanie:

Nice summary of that submission. 👍

Anyhow, I'm psyched about that fight. I have like 15 people, 2 big screens, and a 52' grill lined up for that night.

How'd he come back from that????

Amazing.

I don't know... I'm a big fan of Arlovski. He's beat Sylvia in the past and doesn't have a steroids record (unlike Sylvia).... They'll go at it again, I hope.

Man do I hope Hughes beats Gracie's cocky azz to a pulp. I only hope that Gracie doesn't catch one of Hughes's ground-and-pound arms and locks on it for a while. I agree with Andy in that Gracie doesn't let go, even after a tap. If Hughes ends up by chance in an arm bar, I could see Gracie breaking it just to make a point. He has no respect in any of his past fights towards his opponents, much unlike the current day fighters.

My money's on Matt. Man I hope he wins.

Sounds like a great time...

Here is one that I was disappointed with:

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/114314/arlovski_vs_sylvia/

Yeah, I was looking for a punishing uppercut in the clinch by Arlo, so I was definitely feeling jipped when it turned out to be a submission by Syl. Either way, though, Syl will prolly never be the same after that gruesome submission by Mir. Syl may be tough as nails, but thats cuz he's about as smart as a nail. Anyone with half a RAS, and a temporal lobe would have just said fuggit to the fight when they noticed that they had a 360 degree rotational range of motion in their forearm, but he had the balls to yell at the ref for stopping the fight. I have a feeling this guy may become the next Shamrock (a veritable human punching bag that happens to win every once in a great while by sheer dumb luck). How $hitty... a friggin sub by a striker 👎

Looks like it's going to come true during the next UFC. Sylvia got lucky last time (especially since he went down), and I don't know how messed up Arlovski really was... he can dish and take them like the champ he was and will be again. 👍

He had the roids on board to battle the acute edema... 👎

As mentioned above... He's going down!

My feelings exactly.

Hughes, in my book, is

The Ultimate Fighter.

Matt Hughes.

Nuf said.

Warrior extraordinairre.

What about Frank Shamrock? Formerly, best mixed martial artist around.
I'm considering taking a look at his school out in San Jose.

As for the fight,

Gracie KO'd early in the first round 👍
