I just got my acceptance letter yesterday and will be attending in the fall. I was wondering if you had any advice to share or maybe some helpfull info about the area. You know, stuff like where to live and what classes are hardest............anything at all. I can't quit thinking about it.

Geckel...I was admitted to TN for your class, but since I'm a Mississippi resident (though I live 15 minutes from campus, no joke) I opted for my state school. UT likes to make you pay a WHOLE lot more for being from out of state. That said, UT has its good points. They have good clinics from what I've seen. They have a new dean though, so things may and probably will change although I don't know the possible impacts. Be prepared for crappy parking though. I work at UT as a research assistant so I know a little about that 🙂 Memphis is an ok city with things that can distract you if you let them (Beale St. Music Fest during Memphis in May, multiple bars and clubs, etc.) University policy doesn't always make sense, but hey...what administrative policies do? I would suggest finding housing other than what's available on campus...it'd be cheaper and a lot nicer probably. Memphis has a ton of apartments available since there are numerous undergraduate universities and community colleges in the metro area. I would suggest using apartmentguide.com as a reference. A lot of medical and dental students choose to live on Mud Island, which is a nice place but a tad on the expensive side if you ask me. Oh yeah, you won't run out of places to eat either! Where are you from, Geckel? If you have any other questions about the area, feel free to message me or whatnot.

😀

Congrats Geckel! Welcome to UT. Let's see where to begin. As far as where to live, most dental students choose to live on Mud Island. It's close to school and is a fairly safe part of Memphis. There are several apartment complexes over there if you are wanting to go that way. If you want to live somewhere else try the online ads at commercialappeal.com. Just be careful because certain areas of Memphis... Well, they are just down right scary. https://crimemapper.memphispolice.org/crimemapper/index.cfm will let you know the crime in the local area. Parking for school is not that bad. We have parking passes to a garage in the 910 Madison building which is just down the street from school. Kinda sucks on cold days and or rainy days but not too bad. As far as hard classes go, I didn't think anything was overly hard. Just getting used to the massive amount of work is the main thing. Trust me when I tell you that the 2nd semester is way worse than the first. My main advice though is just to relax and enjoy your time until school starts. PM me if you have any specific questions. See you in August.

Thanks for the replies leia05 and brandiwine1160. You guys were very informative and those links are just what I've been looking for. I can't believe that Memphis has it's own online crime mapper  . I've never heard of anything like that before........bad sign!
If I think of anything else I'll be sure to post. Thanks again

.................and if anyone can think of something else that might be nice for me to know about anything memphis/dschool related then please feel free to post.

Memphis is crazy. You can be in a super nice part of town then turn the corner and all the sudden you are in a scary part of town. Just be careful and be sure to check out the places in person. If you need any advice just drop me a line and I'll see if I can help.

Geckel...beware of Orange Mound...if you get lost there make sure you have your doors locked :-D That said...yeah Memphis has its bad areas but if you avoid those you'll find lots of cool ones in their stead.

Hey Brandiwine...How about driving down Hollywood in the Midtown area where it becomes Alicia and then crosses Sam Cooper? haha...now that's an interesting road...nice, nice, ghetto...nice, nice, ghetto...

Everytime I told someone who's from memphis that I want to move there, they always tell me to avoid orange mound. After a while I just started telling people that I wanted to move to orange mound. No one ever thought it was funny........just looked real worried. Gotta be pretty bad if you can't even joke about it.

I know what you mean about the area being real randomized with nice and rough areas. When I was there for my interview I got lost as hell for the better part of a day. It was no fun at all.............not a fan of big cities.

Can you guys recommend an area that is at least 25 minutes from school, safe, and cheaper than on campus. That is if such a place exists 🙄 . Thanks again

I live in Bartlett. It's about a 20 minute drive to school. Considerably cheaper. Not to mention alot more convienient to stores. ( alot of people who live on Mud Island end up having to drive into Arkansas to go to the grocery store). If it wouldn't cause a residency issue, Horn Lake or Southaven, MS are both nice and about a 15 minute drive on interstate 55. Cordova is also nice but I'm not too sure about the drive. Should be about 25 minutes though.

If you're thinking about living in Mississippi, I can definitely give you a lot of info since that's my home 🙂 I'm not sure how you'd fool the administration to keep your in-state status unless you got either a P.O. box or had your mail sent to your parents' home and then forwarded to you. In choosing between Southaven and Horn Lake, I would opt for Southaven. There are several apartment complexes that are near the heart of town so that you'd be near the interstate, the restaurants (if you don't cook), the grocery stores (over 5 stores + walmart supercenter), open-air mall, movie theatre, etc... One of my friends lives in a place that is maybe a 3 minute drive from the interstate. I could ask her about the price if you like. Southaven has a pretty good PD so our crime rate is not too shabby. We also have several fire departments and a hospital that is near the apartments I just mentioned. The morning commute isn't bad at all via the interstate unless there's a wreck (maybe 1-3 x/month) around the I-55/240 split. On average I get to work at UT in 15-20 minutes, living relatively close to the interstate. If you think it's an option, just ask me for more info! 🙂 The place where Brandiwine lives, Bartlett, is a nice area as well. I have family there, and it's pretty well stocked with grocery stores and access to shops/malls as well. Cordova, in my experience, has too much traffic congestion since it's so close to Wolfchase Mall. You'll see what I mean around Christmas time. Hope this helps! 😀
