Hi ...current Path Residents

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When did you guys ususally take the step3 exam? Does the Path training help you to pass that or reversely? 😛😛😛

No way. Path training has nothing to do with Step 3. Step 3 is all clinical management. Take it as early as possible to get it out of the way.

I totally agree. The earlier, the better. You will never be better at clinical management than the day you graduate from medical school. You can take the exam listing one of the states that requires no post graduate training to sit for the exam right after graduation before you start residency. There were only about 5 total questions that pathology residency helped me with on the Step 3 exam. (that is probably being generous).

Does path training help? Absolutely not.

Most folks take Step 3 during PGY1 or PGY2 year of residency. If you take it earlier, that's probably better in line with what Autopsy101 said. If you wait until end of PGY2 year, for example, it's not the end of the world. One does not need to "ace" the test to pass and most people who take Step 3 don't really care (in comparison to gunners who study for months for Step 1) so the passing threshold for Step 3 is more lenient.

I've always thought that if your priority in residency is to do well on step III, you need new priorities. Step III is a nuisance which most people at the residency level should be able to pass without much difficulty. I have seen people neglect residency education to study for step III, and I never understood it.
