Hello,

I'm getting ready to put out my application for residency and am putting together a list of programs. Everyone knows, more or less, where the "big name" programs are, but I'm looking for some great programs that are not as nationally recognized. Can anybody let me know about strong programs that are not listed on US News and report???

Thanks!

PS: I'm more concerned about strong clinical training with good psychotherapy teaching then I am about coming out of a research heavy program...

I concentrated most of applications in the midatlantic area.

My suggestion is go to a program where they treat an entire county. I noticed in some metropolitan areas--you get a very limited patient population--only drug abusers or malingerers. I have noticed that county wide programs get the entire spectrum of disorders.

3 particular programs stuck out from my own experience. Long Island Jewish Medical Center-treats urban and rural patients (good mix), Stoney Brook--treats an entire county and they have a superb research branch and UMDNJ Camden's Atlantic City branch (where I work). It treats all of Atlantic County in Southern NJ. You'll see everything there. Only complaint I have with the AC branch is there is limited research oppurtunities--but most residents I've seen don't care about that, and only want to focus on the clinical.

Some things I'd look into are 1) does the program have an involuntary unit? 2) are the residents treated like human beings (how much pimping is there?) 3) Is there a good diversity of patients? 4) is there good teaching and lectures?

Cambridge Health Alliance.
It's part of the Harvard 4. Focuses on Community Psychiatry & Psychotherapy Training combined with Opportunities for Research - has a special no-restraints child unit, & the residents are HAPPY. 🙂 Also, they were the most "like me" when I interviewed the circuit of NE, East Coast, and West Coast schools. 😀

Medicine Months are actually full of learning without pimping - it's quite a change from what I was used to. Still very challenging for the new intern, but at least fear of the attending isn't one of the issues we deal with.
