I am a sophomore in college. I currently have a 2.5 gpa and 50 credits.

I failed Chem 1, Physics 1 and English 1 my first semester of freshmen year. I retook the classes and got all A's. So my current DO gpa is 3.4

By the time I graduate, I can have a 3.4 MD gpa and a 3.8 DO gpa.

What would be the best course of action for me? Apply only DO? Do an SMP?

How are you calculating your MD/DO GPAs? Also, what extracurriculars/experience do you have? I assume you haven't taken the MCAT yet.

It's kind of hard to make these kinds of judgments this early in the process, but in my rather unqualified opinion, you'll have to work pretty dang hard to recover from that semester.

Im assuming with the new 2015 grade replacement guidelines.

Start making plans for MCAT and when you are going to take it. Its very hard to get a full scope without your numbers, ECs, actual cGPA/sGPA and LORs.

Do you want to be a doctor? If so, how fast? The DO route will be faster.

How can you assume that you're going to get straight As for the next two and a half years? Your past performance indicates that this will be extremely difficult.

OP did say they retook everything and got A's, so they must have changed something.

Yeah obviously that's an improvement but they've given no information as to how they are doing in classes they're taking for the first time. I would think that getting a good grade on the second try is much easier than getting a good grade on the first try.

I was thinking that, didn't want to say it. The work is only going to get harder.

I basically didn't go to class in my first year of college. But I have fixed my study habits now and it is all going well. Definitely an upward trend for all F's and C's to all A's.

As for EC's, I volunteer at a hospice and refugee center. I am president of a club and I shadow every week. I will try to also get research experience.

I will take the MCAT next year! I am planning on taking a gap year anyways because I will only be 20 when I graduate college.

Well... come back after your MCAT...

Out of curiosity, what is a MD GPA as opposed to a DO GPA? (Don't both look at the same GPA, just DO is more likely to take a lower GPA than a MD school?)

Your GPA for allo is basically the GPA on your transcript (if your school's point system is the same as AMCAS). For osteo, the schools practice grade replacement. So In the OP's situation, the F's initially earned won't be used to calculate GPA, only the A's earned the during retake. That being said, DO schools still see the F's so you don't wanna make that a habit.

DO GPA includes the AACOMAS grade forgiveness policy, which replaces bad grades on a retake. MD GPA does not have this: if you retake a class, both grades will be included in your GPA.

He might be referring to the grade replacement policy that DO schools have.

Apply to both schools and see if you get any love from MDs (DO will love you). Also kill the MCAT.

If you retook the classes, received all A's, and continue this trend, the committee is likely to ask you about it, but it probably won't get you rejected. It will probably depend more on your MCAT at that point.
