Hi everyone,

I decided to finally post this question:

Because AMCAS makes you submit ALL your transcripts from any college-level classes you took, I was advised to submit my transcript from Harvard's Summer School Program I attended as a rising Junior in high school. I took introductory biology and earned a B- in it. I never transferred the credits to count towards any degree, I simply took the class for fun and wanted to see how I would do. Now I have a strange feeling that this course is actually the reason why I may not be getting into medical school this year. AMCAS factored the course into my overall and science GPA's which brought them down a lot more than I thought it would. (Overall GPA went from 3.46 to 3.41, and sGPA dropped significantly more). My advisers claimed that med schools will take high school classes into special consideration, but I am becoming convinced that because med schools get thousands of applications, they quickly screen applications first (which means they look at your last two most important numbers without taking into consideration how that number was calculated) and never come back to them if they fill their class.

Is there any way AMCAS can not factor in classes that did not count towards a degree? I am taking classes now to boost my GPA's, and without my harvard class, I have the potential to reapply with 3.5's across the board.

Thanks!

I seriously doubt an high school class is affecting your application. It's got to be more than that.
A 3.5 anymore really won't take you very far. You need to be applying with a 3.7 or higher GPA in oreder to be competitive.

No, there is no way to eliminate any grades from AMCAS's GPA considerations.

I suspect that your lack of success has more to do with having a 3.4 than a grade in one particular class.

Yeah I figured. I started off a little slow in college as I was figuring out what I wanted to do, then started trending up. Now I am taking 12 more credits at a post-bacc program this semester before I start an SMP in the fall.

I dont really want to turn this thread into a "what are my chances," I just wanted to confirm AMCAS's policies.

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, unfortunately, when applying to med school, there's no "trying out of college-level classes" and earning grades without consequence.

Yea the AMCAS thing sucks. I took two math classes at a junior college that were not college level and they were still calculated into my overall and science gpa. They both hurt my science gpa badly.

What was your MCAT score. A 3.5 isn't a deal killer by itself, but you do need a good MCAT score.

first time: 31R: 12P, 7V, 12B
second time really worked hard on verbal: 32R: 11P, 10V, 11B
Was seriously bummed that my sciences went down... UMiami asked for my best combined score which made me feel pretty good...

I think you'll be okay with an application that applies early and wide.
