Hi,

Long story short, I had a rough time adjusting to a full time job my freshman year and started with a 3.1 GPA. I have worked very hard and gotten straight A's since the end of my sophomore year and have pulled my GPA to a 3.65. I am going to be a senior next year.

I recently read that your high school GPA is calculated in your AMCAS application... I am REALLY worried about this because I took a ton of AP classes in high school and did pretty poorly overall in high school (I managed a 3.2 GPA). The only class I got credit for was a history class, the rest were kinda a waste (but they were nice for preparing me for college). I am worried because I have worked so hard to get my grades to where they are now, and it's all about to go down the drain. Should I be worried or do I not need to include my high school grades on the application?

Thanks guys.

No, HS GPA does not matter. Unless you took college classes in HS.

Just to clarify, AP classes do not count as college classes? Is this correct?

They do but on most college transcripts it will just count as a credit if your college accepts your AP score. There should be no grade shown. That was the case for me

Thanks! Any idea how your credit affected your GPA? So in my case I got 3 credits for a history class... any idea what that grade will compute to?

It didn't. They were just credits that allowed me to skip prerequisite classes or take fewer classes. You can't really give it a grade/GPA value because an AP score doesn't translate into a course grade at many if not most high schools.

High school GPA? No
AP classes in high school? Yes.

High school doth not a college education make.

They count if they came from a college or university and you'll send them on your app. If they're just a harder class your high school offers then no, it won't matter.

I was not even planning to send a HS transcript. I didn't take any college classes in HS. Am I supposed to send a HS transcript??

Read the thread. High school is not included in the application.

Some people take college classes during high school at a community college or local university, as "dual enrollment." THOSE classes are included in the AMCAS GPA because they are college courses. If you take AP classes and use AP credit toward your college degree, you have to include those courses, but only as they appear on your college transcript. Again, this is only if you 1) take the AP exam for the course and 2) use the credits awarded.

If your institution somehow assigned a grade according to your AP credit, then it would count. But I have never heard of such a thing happening, so your high school shouldn't count if you didn't dual enroll.
