Hi,
I am a high school sophmore. I have been intrested in the medical field for quite sometime now and I think that comes from my father, he was an M.D. I just have some questions on planning to get a PharmD that hopefully you guys can answer. I go to an academically competitive high school, where if it's not an A, it's an F. I have pretty good grades, a collative GPA of about 3.0, again however this isn't considered very good where I go, but my mom and I understand that this is not bad. Anyway, I would like to go to New York for school. (I am from California) I understand that St. John's has a 6 year PharmD program. We were in New York over the winter break and I was able to take a look at the campus. (We didn't go inside, just drove through) I liked it, but can anyone tell me anything about the school that I should know? I know Math and Science are important in which I plan on completing Algebra 2, and Chemistry upon graduating high school. Also, interms of volenturing hospital? What would show St. John's that I have an intrest in getting a PharmD. Any information you guys can provide me with about that university would be greatly appreciated. I know this is lengthly but if you could bare with me. Also, I am sorry if this is not the correct forum to post this in, I'm new,
Thanks

Check out the prepharm forum (this will probably get moved there as soon as the mod sees the question anyway.) But to answer the question. Most schools look at volunteering in any medical capacity as beneficial (some posters have worked at the blood bank, hospital pharmacies, community pharmacy, shadowing pharmacists (just watching what they do without much hands on experience.) Generally the closer you are to the pharmacy/pharmacist the better it'll look, but anything's better than nothing. If you don't get into the 6yr program you could always go through pharm tech classes at a CC to get into a pharmacy that way (It's a little harder in Cali because OJT to CPhT isn't allowed anymore.) Then you could go the four-year route like the rest of us.

Moved to a pre-pharmacy forum (as farmercyst predicted with much skill);

You'll get better tailored advice there for your question as it deals with admissions.

Cheers.

Thanks for the reply and I am glad it is in the right forum now so hopefully more people can respone. I am also considering Temple, SUNY Albany and SUNY Buffalo, which if I remember correctly they have 6 year PharmD programs, correct? How compectitive is the admission to each school? According to Collegeboard only 7% of students apply for health and allied services, does that make a difference? St. John's is my number one choice because of location, I would like to stay somewhere in the Northeast after college, does anyone have any experiance with the admissions process there? Any advice is appreciated,
Thanks again

LurkeratSJFC may be able to answer best general questions about the St.Johns Program. You can PM her (sorry if I got gender wrong) if you have any questions about the program, admissions process, etc. I doubt you'll be able to get specific answers on your odds of getting in, but definitely what they look for in a candidate and how their program works.

Sorry for the previous post. When I first tried sending the message the system could not find the user, that is because it was the wrong name. I hate when your eyes play games with you. Anyway thanks, I sent LurkeratSJFC a PM and hopefully I will get a response soon, but if anyone else has any valuble information it is appreciated,
Thanks

SMSC2009 - Thank you for your private note which led me to your post.

Please note that I am with St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY. I am NOT with St. John's University. I would be happy to discuss SJFC with you - but we have a traditional 2 plus 4 program - not a 0 - 6 curriculum.

No matter where you complete your undergrad requirements for us (even if you were a freshman at SJFC), you would have to apply to our pharmacy program separately. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

I don't know much about the 2 SUNY schools, but Temple is a 2+4 year program. You must apply to their Professional program after completing 2 undergrd years. (USP is in the area and offers a 6 year direct-entry program.) Temple is a pretty good school and has a somewhat selective admission process.

I am looking for a university that has the 6 year direct Pharm. D. program for the reason of not having to switch schools, or move around. Does anyone have a list of those schools they can show me? I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Thanks alot, the one's I am intrested in out of those are, St. John's, Rutgers, and Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Massachusetts - Boston may also be a possibility, however I have been to both New York City, and Philadelphia, never been to Boston, so that would be at the bottom now. Does anyone have any personal experiances they would like to share about those universities? Classes, admmision? Anything is appreciated,
Thanks
