There are so many posts in this forum already and it does not help that high school students who are bored during summer break are giving advice that is wrong a lot of the times. There is one poster in particular who I cannot name because of a warning for naming names but the last half of his name is one of the Windows operating systems, he really is getting on my nerves and is seriously inflammatory, like I'm talking cytokine mediated inflamattory, can we make this a petition?

and edit in support of my reasons, if the chief residents can have their own private forum then i do not see how that cannot apply to another forum

lollllll

edit: I voted yes

I say let them in here. At least they will quickly learn that we don't appreciate their non-expertise.

It's just the Internet. Who cares? Let them have their fun.

Let them post wherever they want. If you think their advice sucks, you can always ignore them. Should undergrads be banned from the med student forums? They probably think we say stupid **** too. I say forum freedom for everyone.

You gotta appreciate the large patience med students have to deal with pesky wild premeds showing off their misinformation.

This is unnecessary. No one is immune to giving out bad advice... although I will say that high school students should come to SDN to primarily read and learn before dishing out advice. But the whole point of a forum is to have an open discussion... more perspectives, even seemingly "wrong" perspectives, can be important. In short, just let people post. No banning.

I used to post in the pre-allo threads all the time as a high school student and that was where I got the best answers to my questions. In my mind, hSDN is all of the neurotic threads that most of the users in the pre-med forums hate. Most of the threads are talking about AP classes or which undergrad to attend. For the people that already have that figured out, hSDN isn't that helpful. They should definitely be allowed to post here.

They should DEFINITELY not be able to post in med school forums, though.

I know exactly who you're talking about . . . and YES I agree.

I don't think the problem is that hSDN people post here, I think the problem is that they shouldn't offer advice to people who are in the middle of their application process. I've seen the person you're talking about speak almost like an adcomm, who is very harsh and liberal with their advice, but is usually very much off the mark. Someone who doesn't know better might believe this person is actually knowledgable and that's a problem.

I'm OK with them posting here. What I'm not OK with is when they're giving advice where they have no practicing what they preach.. I remember some people getting a lot of flak for that. From what I've seen, hSDN is not terribly helpful (you could go to College Confidential instead for wider exposure ). Sweeping restrictions are not an answer.

No.

1) People will just change their status to pre-med and make things more confusing.
2) There are residents on this forum that give bad advice and even more medical students that give terrible advice. Title/level in training is only a rough gauge of one's competence. I don't want people to listen to my advice because I'm a resident. I want people to listen to my advice because it makes sense and have a reputation for being helpful.

+1

As an hSDN member, I can't seem to find who you're talking about with the last part of their name being a Windows operating system. I can assure you, though, that they're not a "regular poster" on most hSDN threads. If you read through some of our threads, I think you'll find that most of us try to avoid giving advice to Pre-med college students, because we realize that we don't know anything about the process yet.

In regards to the banning of one group posting in another forum, I think most hSDN members would change their title or status anyway so they could keep posting in Pre-Allo. What you're suggesting could spiral out of control, with Pre-meds not being to post in med student forums, med students not being able to post in residency forums, etc. Just some advice to make it clear: Don't trust the advice of someone with an hSDN badge if you're making important decisions.

You're talking about me, and I'm a sophomore in college. Not in high school. 😴

Med students can post in resident forums. Both are healthcare professionals. Premeds and high schoolers are not and should stay away from those forums unless they have a valid question

I think that not allowing hSDN members to not be able to post here will end up backfiring. Remember it's all honor system when you register so at least when an hSDN member posts you know that the kid is in high school and that you should take their advice with a grain of salt. If you restrict their access you will just see them register as Pre-Meds and continuing to give out bad advice except now you don't have that initial indicator.

🙄 In his defense, I only recently removed the "h.SDN" designation on my username after figuring out how, and he isn't the first person to make that error. It's all good, at any rate, but the subtle "call-out" nature of this thread is nevertheless a) against forum rules and b) rather amusing
