Highschool student highly considering Pharmacy
Started by brianc
Focus on getting in to a university first bud.
If you are talking about trying to get in a set 0-6 program that is a little different. However, I'd recommend not doing that and just going to a normal 4 year university to keep your options open in case you don't decide pharmacy is for you.

It's always funny to me when high school kids come on here and say they've decided they want to do pharmacy. There's nothing wrong with it, but I just remember what I was like in high school. I had no real clue what I wanted to do with my life. Besides pick up chicks, of course
Ahh... high school.

I know, right... It's hard to imagine how you could know for certain that you want to be a pharmacist for the rest of your life when you're 18. I mean, I've changed so much since I was 17 / 18 that if I'd been asked to make a commitment like that back then, I would've been like, "wtf you smokin'?"
I think 0-6 programs are awful and ITA with two-thirty on that one.
Well, I'm certain I can get into Temple. As for Jefferson or USP, I'm not so sure.
As for 0-6 programs, they sound okay, but I am not liking what I hear about USP.
Well as I talk to my classmates, most of them are fairly certain about their future profession.
As for being a Pharmacist for the rest of my life... I have worked at my Uncle's Pharmacy before. I didn't do anything that required experience -- I just swept, clean, sometimes pick up the phone. However, I liked what was going on. It seemed like a job where you can talk to people and actually help them.

You're obviously a smart kid and one of the sharper tools in the shed these days but a statement like:
"Well as I talk to my classmates, most of them are fairly certain about their future profession..."
I have to laugh out loud. You guys are not even in your 20s yet, and you're acting like you know, for certain, what you want to do? Having BTDT, that is definitely not the way it happens for 99% of your friends, so I'd take what they have to say with an itty-bitty grain o' salt. A much better option will be using your elders - Us here on SDN but also, your Uncle! That's an amazing connection. See about getting a C.PhT license, and maybe he'll let you work for 5-7 hours a week tagging & bagging or checking expiration dates or something so you can see the many sides to pharmacy. There are many negatives to the job / profession so you need to go in eyes wide open.
Again I'll re-iterate that I think HS-->PharmD programs are awful.
Too funny. When I was 18, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up: Retired. Old people looked like they were living the dream! I just wanted to be retired and young. Or work a menial-wage job at a fancy resort somewhere. Oh, to be young and know everything again.I know, right... It's hard to imagine how you could know for certain that you want to be a pharmacist for the rest of your life when you're 18. I mean, I've changed so much since I was 17 / 18 that if I'd been asked to make a commitment like that back then, I would've been like, "wtf you smokin'?"

Yes, that's true. I would like to thank you for the advice. I don't doubt you when you say my classmates will change their mind. We've had career fairs and projects in the past though so yes, some students in my class seem fairly certain, not 100% though. Also, I agree there is a chance that I will change my mind in the future.
That is why I'm here though. I'm just reading through threads and trying to see if pharmacy is something I want to do for the rest of my life.
I mean, yes, it might be quite early but I rather not waste money or time. I'm thinking if I decide early now, I can take the appropriate AP courses, volunteer in more of a medical environment, and do more research on colleges, so I'm definitely ready when the time comes.
I know a few people, my older cousin, for example, who are pretty much wasting time in college. He's in his 3rd year of college and still does not know what he wants to do. I don't disagree with what he's doing - as I believe it really is an important decision. However, I think he should have made it earlier. 3 years is a lot of time to waste in my opinion.
Thanks again for the advice though. Any other comments are appreciated 😀

I would say go talk to multiple pharmacists, or pharmacy technicians before you apply pharmacy school.
and make sure you talk to different type of pharmacists eh? and not only the retail ones
