Hello I was wondering if I went to college and get a BS degree in Biomedical Engineering and went on to medical school would I still be able to be a practicing physician or would I be classified into the researcher category?

Get your undergrad in whatever you want. If you go to medical school then you would be able to practice medicine.....you could even do research as well. 😉

We have all sorts of degrees in our medical school which include the traditional biology, pre-med, chemistry B.S. degrees as well as English, Journalism and Music. I would get whatever degree you like; as long as you take enough of the required classes for medical school admissions I think you will be happiest pursuing the degree that you are most interested in rather than the degree that is most likely to lead you into medicine/research. In fact one of my MSTP classmates is a music major so your undergraduate degree doesn't automatically classify you as a specific type of doctor.

During your undergraduate career get whatever degree you want, just make sure that you take the premed course requirements needed to get into med school, you can find these requirements listed on the admissions website of the med schools you're interested in or you can ask the premed advisor at your college. You will also need to take the MCAT, which is sort of like the SAT to get into college but it has physics, biology, etc. Once you are in med school you are studying to be a physician. Med school takes four years, but after that you have the option to either do a residency in a medical field you're interested in and become a practicing physician or you can get a research appointment and become a laboratory researcher (in whatever research topic you're interested in). Good luck and I think it's awesome that you're in high school and already thinking about the future. Don't forget to have plenty of fun and enjoy college!
