I'm having a dilemma right now while registering for my grad school courses.
So it turns out that I can take either histology or general microbiology but not both for this semester.
This may sound like a petty question because BOTH of these courses are recommended courses by many dental schools, but I was wondering if either one has the "edge" even in the slightest way in convincing the adcom that I can handle difficult courses....let me know what you all think!

Depends completely on the rigor of the course, which the adcom would probably not know. I would recommend taking whichever course is more interesting to you. I will say that microbiology would probably be more applicable to more areas in dentistry (microbio, cariology, endo, perio, immunology, etc.). Microbio is also a large section on step 1. Histology is pretty much only applicable to histology and pathology to a much lesser extent.

HISTO!!

Taking it in undergrad will make the histo course in D1 year more manageable, especially the lab portion. I didn't take it prior to dental school and for the first few weeks felt like I was staring at an abstract form of art during histo lab.

Besides, micro is heavily memorization-based, so you will have to re-memorize most of the stuff in dental school anyway. Difficulty-wise, however, they are roughly on par in my opinion.

Take microbiology. Most students in dental school have not taken histology, so you'll be on the same track as them. However, microbiology, the upper-level undergraduate course, is required for a couple schools and is something that many students have taken.

Microbiology will be much more helpful when preparing for the DAT and it will be much more useful to have that background in dental school because many courses utilize aspects of microbio, INCLUDING histology.

I took histology and microbiology last semester. Histology was miserable but I honestly learned so much. It ties in everything you know about biology and you get to visualize why things function like they do. I'd highly recommend Histology. Micro is good too but I'd recommend Histology, it's an amazing course, probably nothing like you have taken before.

I have heard knowing histology a bit would help a TON in dental school as that seems to be one of the courses people struggle with a lot.

Maybe double check dental school requirements because I have seen some schools that now require microbiology as prereq, but I haven't come across a school that required histology, the most I've seen is it being highly recommended. Just my observations
