I am interested in HIV/AIDS and have done volunteering at AIDS clinic and some HIV research. But I feel like I am not accomplishing much and would like to take it a step further and really do something great. Does anyone have ideas?

Thanks!

How about a trip to Africa or Thailand?

Have you tried organizing a huge event about HIV/AIDS or maybe a big student outreach program?

Definatly don't go foreging ahead oveseas without getting involved with a well established program (Like Christian childrens fund). Do not get involved with a program untill you thuroughly research what they belive, what they want to do, and how they do it.

you contribute much more by working with an established organization. Furthermore, they may need your help in the US more than they need it abroad, (depending on your talents). Creating a meaningful and lasting impact in another country, especially those in which you would be linguisically and culturally isolated takes serious time. additionally the consequences of your actions can be a double edged sword.

that said, there is much need in this world, and with compasion, dedication, prudence and determination, you can do a lot of good.

just my two cents from experiance.

ps, I have no affiliation with CCF, and no im not spell checking

BUMP, thanks

you don't have to go overseas. become an HIV prevention counselor. work with people in your community when they come to get tested. help them to develop personal plans about keeping themselves safe.

help one person at a time. learn to feel good about that, because that's all we ever really have, unless we go into research.

www.hwaters.org

go here. if the link doesn't work, google healing waters. If you live in SF and want to volunteer, talk to Rob.
It's worth it.

One way I got involved was to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS at my college and in my community (working with neighborhood kids). If you would like ideas for specific events, please feel free to PM me. As a relatively unskilled volunteer, the best you can probably expect to do is to spread awarness of the disease and its ramifications, and touch a few individual lives. If you really want to do "great" things, think about the training you should get (MD? PhD? MPH?) so that your work can eventually have a wider impact. In other words, don't put the cart before the horse.

As a person who has done HIV research since 2001 and got my MPH, I can honestly say that there are so many avenues to do HIV research! It depends on what aspect you would like to become involved in. clinical? pharmaceutical? prevention? outreach? health promotion? sexuality research?

The exciting thing about HIV is that it touches upon so many different aspects of public health, more so than other diseases (no one wants to address sex, sexuality and drugs!!!!). I've been abroad to do research, and if this is an option, I would suggest finding a program organized in America, by Americans that place you with sister organizations overseas.

Contact me if you would like to talk about some resources. Good luck!
