OP, hobbies are kinda dependent on what you like to do. Here are a few of mine:
  • guitar
  • volleyball
  • watching movies and tv shows
  • playing with my kids
  • cooking and eating out

Not feeling good about this cycle!!! I have invested so many money so far. What kind of hobbies are you keeping in order to stay sane?
No joke- at some point I realized the most crucial thing to staying sane throughout this long and often solitary process is having friends and talking to them (fairly) regularly. So I recommend whatever you like doing that is not a solo activity. Even if it’s just sittin around yakkin

Try setting goals for whatever hobby you decide to pick up. Goal setting for a hobby is a great way to have a distraction and an excuse to not get in your head over the application cycle. Find something you want to do, set some little goals to start and see what happens.

Did someone say recommendations!???

True crime:
Hit Man
The clearing
Dr.Death
Up and Vanished (S1, couldnt get into S 2)

Interesting stories:
The moth

Misc

Yes! I love all of Crooked Medias podcasts.

Id also like to add:
Bad Batch
Dr. Death
All Access: Med School Admissions
The Curb Siders (IM Podcast)
America Dissected
The Ezra Klein Show
The Daily Show (audio of the TV show)

As for my other hobbies besides listening to podcasts...

Intellectual/Challenging Stuff/Medically Related:
* Programming (this is like my sudoku and I usually involve friends that are in the field to solve whatever problem we decide on)
* Building and programming mechanical keyboards (I know.... but I love it so whatever)
* Film photography (mainly do this when I go on trips or new places but you can also learn how to develop film which is cool)

Exercise:
* Long distance running (hard to get started but once you do its awesome for managing stress)
* Lifting weights (I bought those Bowflex adjustable weights and like running its a great way to blow off steam)

Visit some National Parks! There are 419 (including parks + monuments/historical sites). Brings out a little adventure in me, and I feel a bit more knowledgeable or closer to nature.

Also, cooking with a friend/S.O. - there is a lot to be said about creating a meal together as opposed to selecting something off a menu.

Whatever makes YOU happy! I personally really like petting cats, walks (particularly with the dog) and adult coloring.

And watching TV with my boyfriend and his cat...Good social support from people who love you and not letting yourself become isolated is a must with whatever you pivk!

Hobbies I am using to relax and be productive:
Art (painting and drawing). If you are not a good artist, you can get those paint by the numbers kits where everything is premade. All you have to do is color in the canvas.

Working out - Basic kickboxing for cardio and weightlifting for strength

Baking/Cooking - Cookies and brownies are my vice of choice.

Upcycling thrifted clothes: I am teaching myself how to sew and tailor items, so I like hunting for basic pieces to see or transform.

Reading sci fi, historical drama, and fantasy

Listening to podcasts: I like the following: Dr. Death, Slow Burn, Con Artists, The Dropout, The Mysterious Mr. Epstein, Dirty John, Freakonomics Radio, American Scandal, Stuff Your Mother Never Told You and The Happiness Lab.

OP the best way to get things off of your mind is to pick up something new, that way you delve into it and are motivated to succeed.

Personally I do the following:
  • Working out, just started seriously and set myself a goal
  • Soccer every weekend in a league
  • Random video games like Pokemon in my down time
  • Various pick up sports with my friend
  • Podcasts while I workout/commute anywhere

I've really enjoyed getting into and trying to sustain healthy habits! (Hopefully they will stay with me during the stress of medical school)

-Running
-Weight lifting
-Yoga
-Hiking
-Cooking plant-based meals

I've also binged podcasts and my all-time favorite is: Crime Junkie! Another really sad, but informative one is Believed.
