I've got one of these for UCSD a while back and heard that it was essentially a rejection. Is the same thing true (hold for interview = rejection) for UCSF? I mean, I can't think of very many people who would turn down an acceptance to this school.

i got one of those letters last saturday from ucsf. i posted asking for info. somebody responded and said around 200 are put in that category and about 10% get interviews. they also gave the web site where they got the info. look at saturday's posts.

Here is the exact quote from gower at medicalgold.com

"Of those submitting secondaries, approximately 37% are selected for interview and approximately 200 placed in a ranked hold category. Of those 200, approximately 10% will eventually be interviewed, the rest rejected. In addition to numerical criteria, interview decisions are made based on letters of evaluation and medically-related work experience."
