Okay still trying to figure out if they are the same or different. I am posting the places I got placed on hold. If you have gotten a rejection from these post-secondary, please post. This would mean that the two are different for that institution. If noone has, then I guess we are all screwed. If you want to know about a school post your holds.

HOLDS AT (all post-sec, pre-interview) - Rush, Penn State (today 😡 ), UCSD, VCU

Thanks

I'll play

Albany Hold, Buffalo Hold

GW and Drexel holds 🙁

Pre-interview hold at CWRU, for MSTP program

nice way to reject me? 😀

I'm on hold at Albany, and VCU I think. I don't know if this counts, but I'm in the second interview pool at Wake Forest.

Hey!

Here are my guesses and holds:

I've been rejected from Albany post-secondary, so that hold is a valid hold - not a rejection.

I haven't heard a thing from GW. I've heard that people on hold received a card or something identifying their "hold" status, and since my app's been complete since the beginning of August, it's not that they haven't reviewed my file. So I guess the people who received a notification card from GW that they are on hold are better off than those who didn't.

My holds include: Drexel, Penn State, and UMDNJ-RWJ. I also have about 7 schools which haven't said anything to me since my app. complete letter.

I've heard that the Penn State hold is their way of chickening out from sending a rejection.

Hods are generally not good signs at this point in the season. The school will call you for interviews if it feels like it will not be able to fill its class based on current and projected interviews; and this is often not the case. It, however, possible.

I will second that Albany hold is a valid hold...got a rejection from them myself.

Actually depends on the school. We've all heard that story of someone getting taken off of the hold list and being accepted 3 weeks before classes start. My feeling--A hold is a hold until a rejection (or acceptance) letter comes... Pre- & post-interview holds are also very different

I've not much to add, except to add that I'm on hold at Buffalo.

A question, though: What about schools that you've heard absolutely NOTHING from? 😕 I was complete the first week of September and still have not heard a peep from several schools.

When I call, they just give me the standard "your application is still under review" line. Is it safe to assume that these are just rejections? At least that way I'd know where I stood. 🙄

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this thread (certainly I'm confused by reading it) on the terminology. Here's how I understand it:

* Rejection: You get a letter that says thanks but no thanks.

* Hold: You get a letter post-secondary but pre-interview that says you're on a hold for interview list. Not quite good enough to interview; not so bad to reject outright.

* Wait list: You get a letter post-interview that says you're on a wait list for admission. Not quite good enough to accept; not so bad to reject outright.

If you ain't heard from them, then you're none of the above. [Chances are you'll end up in the reject pile.] And if you get a reject letter, you ain't on hold. You're rejected; end of story.

Am I missing something?

schools don't always tell you you're on hold. e.g. i called tulane & they told me over the phone i was on hold, but i never received any other notification.

and sometimes you are in the "alternate" pile and sometimes you are a "continued candidate" whatever the hell those mean. It's like they can't say waitlist for some reason. As if not using the root word 'wait' will not make me wait or something.

Um, I am going to have to disagree with you on this😀 Being on HOLD doesn't necessarily mean "not quite good enough" to be interviewed.

This med school process is very ... strange. I was put on hold at Rush but have already interviewed at Duke, UPenn, Jersey, Mich etc you get the point.

As for the HOLDS, this may help you guys:
I was rejected PRE - INTERVIEW by

Albany
Drexel
VCU
GW
Loyola
UCSF

HOLDS: Morehouse

As for Rush and Penn State, I believe they put everyone on HOLD and do not reject people.

For those on HOLDS, if I were you, I wouldn't treat it as a rejection and would continue to notify the schools of my interest by updating my file.

Kovox, I hope you get into your first choice cuz i know your story man. you deserve it. good luck

No slight meant toward you or anyone else, Kovox. 🙂 Just my shorthand for how the schools treat it. This is indeed a very capricious process and one school's rejection can be another school's first pick. Go figure.

And I agree: If you're on hold, let the schools know you're still very interested.

Thanks.

My first choice school was UCSF but unfortunately, they don't lub me as much as I lub them🙁

I interviewed at GW, and got the outright rejection. Kinda hurt, until I remembered that I wasn't at all impressed with the school and already had the acceptance to my top choice. Anyway, if you've got a hold from GW post interview, you're not sunk yet.

Just to clarify - as some people seem confused.

We are talking only post-secondary and pre-interview here. For post-interview, we can start another thread if you guys like. This is for those of us wanting interviews at these damn schools. So ramonmacguire had it right.
Rejection - thanks but no thanks, your app is already in the trashcan before you get the letter.
Hold - we are supposedly still reviewing your application again and again and again and again.
I am going to start all the schools mentioned in the GONNER category and then move them up to valid holds after someone tells us of a post-sec rejection:

So to sum up so far:

VALID HOLDS

Albany
VCU
Drexel
Tulane
GW
UCSF
UMDNJ-RWJ

YOUR A GONNER (these can move to the other category as soon as someone tells me of an outright post-secondary rejection)

Rush
Penn State
UCSD
Buffalo

Lets keep these going please

These schools are getting pretty creative, aren't they? I haven't heard of this before, but that doesn't mean much. A guess: a step between rejection and being put on a formal waitlist. Kinda like a pre-waitlist waitlist. Anyway, I would call the admissions office and very nicely ask someone to explain it to me. I also would ask them what happens to most of these people on post-interview hold. Good luck. Don't let them get you down.

X- you can remove RWJ from the you're agonner list. i was rejected post secondary last year....considering i am a NJ resident (that actually worked at RWJ hospital for a year!) being put "on hold" is a good thing.

By the way, someone said your story is interesting. Care to elaborate, i am curious!

Just to add to the list: on hold at U Chicago (post-secondary, pre-interview) but I know someone who got flat-out rejected post-secondary from Chicago, so it's probably a valid hold.

perseverant,

Thanks for the RWJ, I fixed it on that list.

About the story - I am not sure what you are referring to, pm me or post what you mean. I am a bit confused now.
