Annoying Question #2:

One of the comments a lot of my Mud Phud friends have made is that they thought there were schools that might have knocked them out of the running because they assumed that they (the applicant) would not accept that location due to coming from a "desirable" state.

I really could care less about location. You all may think that can’t be true….but my life says otherwise. I’m pretty basic in my needs these days.

So, any tips for how to let the admissions folks know that I really DON’T care about location? I grew up in a tiny rural town with not even a general store, lived in Africa for two years under a dictator and a coup d’état/concomitant death. Lived in the Southern US, the west, the northeast…I have very little family anywhere, what exists is spread across the US…..Pretty much anywhere (location) is AOK with me (as long as there is fast internet, good libraries, and I can make my own cafe and take my dog for walks someplace a little isolated, I’m fine).

My residency is California, and I fear some schools may take one whiff of that and think I am a “Californian” (I was born there, but NOT in the California people think of….CA is great, but not necessary for my happiness). Some of MY top ranked schools are in uncool places (that I’ve been to and like) and I don’t want them to turn me down sight unseen. Suggestions? Put this in an essay somewhere? Will they gather flexibility from my histoire?

You can express your interest for a particular school in the secondary application. Mentioning specific faculty at that school will demonstrate your interest by showing that you took the extra step when completing the secondary. You can also contact the school after completing the secondary to let them know of your interest. Do not dwell on the point that you are open to live in what you term "a less desirable location". The director may take that as insincere (the lady doth protest too much, methinks), or as an insult (presumably, they had a choice about where to live, and they selected Buzzard Gap, West Virginia). Focus on the inherent qualities of the institution, and not the externalities of the location.
