I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of work we should be expecting to do in dental school. I've heard there are a lot of tests to take, but what about papers? Lab reports? ... Problem sets? I really don't know what to expect.

Homework? I haven't had homework since high school.

Rarely a paper, just tests...lots of them. When homeworks are assigned, it really doesnt matter because you were going to study that for the test anyways. There is plenty of work, 90% of the time you are not told to do it, you just do because if you don't, you will be screwed.

Here's what we've had so far.

Gross Anatomy: Keep up on readings. Study for exams.

Biochemistry: Keep up on readings. Study for exams. Three short papers (2, 3 pages each) on three discussion questions assigned randomly to each person.

Dental Anatomy: Keep up on readings. Study for exams. Come in on your own time to practice / finish wax-ups.

Operative Technique: Keep up on readings. Study for exams. Come in on your own time to practice / finish up preps (or fillings or anything else we'll be doing later in the course).

Embryology: Was a self-taught course on a CD. Just read the stuff on the CD and take an online exam.

Neuroscience: Keep up on readings. Study for final. One short group project (design an OSCE) and one short individual project. Seriously. Very short.

Physiology: Keep up on readings. Study for final. Study for small group sessions which occur periodically and also the OSCEs which occur every couple weeks.


Oh and when I say readings I mean you can either go out and buy the textbook which no one seems to do or you can read the lecture slides and the transcripts that the medical students write up. Or your own notes if you take good ones.

So yeah it seems like the general trend is that most science classes you need to study for the exams and have relatively little other work. For the dental classes there will be more hands on assignments given during class which you need to come in on your own time to complete and practice.
