I am in a real bind. I took the april MCAT and scored 6V, 9P, 8B, and Q for writing. I go to a fairly good school (top 20 or so) with a 3.0 science GPA and overall of 3.33 G.P.A. I am not sure whether it is worth my time and money to apply this cycle. I mean my extracurriculars are decent (research, etc.) and my letters are as well, in addition to being an URM. But I am not sure if I have a realistic shot. What do you guys think?

I'd say that you have a shot. Your numbers are right around the average (maybe a little bit lower) and coming from a good school and being an URM will certainly help.

But, just to be safe, I'd consider taking the MCAT again. I have almost the same score (9BS, 8PS, 6V, S), but I'm a practicing podiatrist so I have a lot of relevant clinical experience. I'm not an URM and I'm 40 years old, which may or may not hinder my acceptance. I'm wondering the same exact thing as you. Should I retake it? So far, I'm planning on retaking it if only to raise my verbal (it can't get any lower, can it!!??)

I think it also depends on where you're going to apply. Some schools are not as competitive as others. Also, they're going to want to know just how badly you want to be a DO and how much you know about it.

I think you have a decent chance of getting in, my numbers weren't too different (8V),and i got in to a few places. I think you should probably get some interviews, and interviews are where it really counts. If you can interview well and really show your motivation for osteopathic medicine, and being a physician in general then I think you should be okay. I would definitely apply this time around. Worst case scenario, you don't get in, but you have experience for the next time around. Look at it this way: If you don't apply, youre definitely not getting in. give it a shot. I think you'll be allright with your chances. By the way, whats URM?

URM = Under Represented Minority, I believe.

Hey Commodore2,

I think you should definately apply. I am a URM and had similar numbers (10BS, 7PS, 7V) and a similar GPA and I was accepted into all three of the Osteopathic schools to which I applied. I chose to attend NYCOM. I also completed a post-bacc program at LECOM. If you have the opportunity to do a post-bacc program I would definately recommend it. It was a great experience and it will really prepare you. The post-bacc program at LECOM is very good, and so far the numbers have been excellent as far as students ultimately gaining admission into school. I think it's somewhere around 90%......or close to that. Good luck!! You can also PM me if you like.
