I am trying to figure out If I should Participate in the honors college at Texas Tech. Im not sure exactly what an honors college is, but after reading about it I have a good understanding of the concept.
The main reason why I would do this is because you can get an early acceptance into their Medical school after taking X amount of classes and making an A or B in them. I would of cource have to apply and interview to get into the medical school when the time comes. With this program, you do not have to take the MCAT. The negatives of the program isthe proffesor is not alowed to give grading curves. With not much knowledge of the program, does anyone know in general, are Honor classes that much harder where it is exceptional harder to get an A. I went to the website and it said honor classes are no more then 25 students, and it is based on writing and thinking and are more interactive then normal classes. My concerns are that the classes will be to hard to get good grades thus making it impossible to get into med school. Is this a good program, or do the risks out weigh the benefits. Im just trying to find answers from someone who has been through an honors college or who knows about them. Thanks

It's possible to enroll in the honors program. But, do not take honors courses in the first semester. During first semester, spend some time to gather the information you want to know from upperclassmen. Make your decision according to the most accurate information.

I graduated both with honors (in research in biology) and from the Honors College from Missouri and I really enjoyed it. The honors classes actually seemed to be slightly easier, not harder, because the professors knew you were an enthusiastic student and really wanted to be there. It was pretty rare for it actually to be more work (like in only one class, we had an extra 3-5 page paper to write), but it was worth it for the small group interactions with the professor. I got a good letter of rec from one of my religious studies professors that way because she taught the recitation section of the 3 class series she taught instead of a TA. I recommend it. 😀
