Do you guys think joining honour societies such as the Alpha Epsilon Delta, Golden Key, etc., help your application?

If you actually DO something with the society, sure it can help.

If you just list that you're in it. Don't think that helps too much. I listed a bunch on my app. They certainly don't hurt. If you want to shell out a small fee to join, go ahead. Don't expect too much out of it though.

not really unless you take leadership roles (if they are even available)

They certainly don't hurt.

Don't pass up Phi Beta Kappa (or the engineering equivalent) - those are the ones that really matter.

Is Golden Key the one you have to pay to join? I think I have a whole stack of mail from them sitting around somewhere. And, to be honest, I am more than a bit surprised to hear that they're not a scam.

AED definitely offers scholarships. I'd go for it, but remember that honor societies (or most extracurriculars, in general) won't make up for any other weaknesses in your application, nor will they severely tip the scale in your favor.

Some are worth it, others aren't. There seem to be a ton of "honor societies" jumping up all over the place. I joined golden key and never once got an email or a single newsletter from them. No clue if they are a scam or not, but makes me wonder.

IMO Phi Betta Kappa is probably the only real one worth joining.

I already asked a question similar to this. I think yes, but the ones on here who are going to have an MD/PhD/JD all attached to the end of their name and are going to attend Harvard think they are worthless. If you attend a state school they certainly do. They certainly helped my friend and they got brought up in the interview.

Only one worth joining: Phi beta kappa.

If you have the money, go for it. It's a nice touch bc it shows you are top of your class (Golden Key only sends invite to the top 15% or 10% at each university right?). Having said that, I don't think it would make much of a difference, especially if you aren't going to be active in the organization itself.

Be sure to check out each one before paying the fee.
Societies like Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa are worth joining if you're asked simply because of their high admission standards and significant post grad network. Some of those societies (PKP in particular) offers a number of scholarships, research grants and travel support to members.
Ultimately, joining an honors society is (usually) no more than another line on the CV but if you can land the "insert name here" research grant, it could mean alot more.

That and it doesnt hurt to be rocking a bunch of honor chords on graduation day. 😎
