Hi everyone!
I am brand new on this website. A little intro -- I am a nursing student, hoping to become a psychiatrist. To be honest I kind of regret doing nursing instead of pre-med. I think I just wanted to "get my feet wet" before committing to the medical field. But anyway, I am interested in psychiatry because of my own struggles with depression and suicide attempts. I'm in recovery now, and have the desire to self-actualize. My first question is, can a "general" psychiatrist still see adolescents, or would I HAVE to do the child/adolescent psychiatry fellowship? My second question is, can I do that fellowship later in life or must I do it right after psych residency? And lastly, I joined this website to get some support and inspiration. What do y'all like about psychiatry? Obviously it has pros and cons. But I'd like to know your personal experience working in the field. I'm going to try to get a job as a psych nurse and see if I subsequently still want to be a psychiatrist. Any encouragement is helpful.
Thanks!!
