I was able to do rotations in both Yale's ED and Hopkins ED and loved both of them. I plan to apply to both next year for residency but wanted to know what you guys thought. I know some of you will say "go with the region you prefer" or "it doesn't really matter, both are great programs", but please give honest advice/opinions. I could see myself living in either city and got along with each of the hospital's staff really well. Both are opening up brand new emergency departments, both have great international opportunities, funding, etc. These are just some of the reasons why I'm having trouble deciding which I would prefer. Granted, this is depending I even get interviews at either and have the opportunity to rank both. Thanks for your help! I'm a long time reader, first time poster, so please....minimal trolling? 🙂

Ok, several views and no replies. 🙁 At least how about an unsubstantiated "Yale" or "Hopkins"?

It's unlikely that many other people have done rotations at both places, so how could anyone help you pick between the two? Go where you feel you fit in better.

Rotations at both, probably not but people probably interviewed at both places or know residents at both places. It's interesting how people are always so reluctant to comment on programs in the EM threads. Yes, the community is small, but there is nothing wrong with stating facts or even giving an honest opinion.

Hopkins does have more letters....I guess I'm sold.

How have you already done rotations at both? Are you a 3rd year? I wasn't even aware that you could do away rotations that early.

I am in a 5 year MD/MPH program. I am somewhere between my 3rd and 4th year....kind of like a limbo year academically.

If you have done rotations at both places, wouldn't YOU be the one to know which one is better for YOU? 😉 I mean - people usually do only one residency, so it is hard to compare two programs much beyond interviews or rotations, which you have already done. And if you are still undecided, you are probably better off ranking based on geography than on a "random stranger's" opinion.

I interviewed at both and both were in my top 5. Honestly, I really loved both programs and feel that they were similar in many ways to my needs. I guess what you have to assess is what you are interested in and what you feel you want to do after residency. I am interested in international medicine, and all of my top programs were strong in this area. Saying that, Hopkins had a cool program called "FAST" which allowed you to subspecialize in your fourth year. Work loads were similiar between the programs but I felt Yale offered more elective time. In the end, I had a better feel for Yale and ranked it higher. So I can't say one over another definitely, but since you were asking for opinions, I will say "Yale".
Good luck in your decision!
