NinerNiner999 recently posted in another thread that Hopkins will become a 1-4 program this year (they were a 1-3 program previously).

I believe Niner is a resident there, so he probably knows best, but is this true? The Hopkins EM residency website still says they are a 1-3 program.

Anyone know why they decided to change, and what the new curriculum will look like? I had been debating whether or not to apply to JHU this year, but will probably delay my decision on that until I can learn more about why they're making the change and how they think the added year will improve their program.

they used to be 2-4, right? so if the website says they are 1-3 then perhaps a change has taken place?

They have been 1-3 for at least the past few years I believe. They may have been 2-4 before that, I'm not sure.

Hmmm .... I haven't heard ANYTHING about this (I'm an MS4 there going into EM). The PD has had numerous so-you're-applying-in-EM meetings and this hasn't come up. Will have to check this out. I'll let you know what I find out ...

i interviewed there in '04 and they were proudly touting the 1-3 +/- fellowship as the way to go....either way there ain't no beatin' b'more!

It is true - we are changing our curriculum to a 1-4 format (from a 1-3), with the emphasis placed on a fourth year fellowship at Hopkins. The fellowship details have not been finalized to my knowledge but they are most likely flexible to fit your goals. I really don't know much more than that, but I think it will help with the organization and functioning of the program on many levels...

Thanks for the inside scoop. I'm intrigued -- looking forward to learning the details once Hopkins starts to advertise this. It would be ideal if they modeled it after Beth Israel Deaconess where the 4th year is optional, is like a fellowship, and carries a decent salary (around $100k).

Actually, we do this now - the ACS (Assistant Chief of Service) is open to all graduates and is a mini-attendingship...

Haven't heard it straight from the horse's mouth yet (not calling anyone a horse, however!), but this is certainly the scuttlebutt around here, to mix a metaphor or two.

 I guess I meant mixing metaphors together (farming and nautical, two great tastes together at last ...)

NinerNiner...

Do you know of any EM grads who have done a Critical Care fellowship at JHH? Do you know anything about the CC fellowship there in regards to EM residents?

To be honest, I don't know too much about this. One of our graduates (And former chiefs) is currently a fellow/attending there and a couple of our attendings are working with th program. To my knowledge, I don't know anyone who has done this directly yet...

A UConn EM graduate did a CC fellowship there. I have emailed their former fellowship director (who is now a big wig in the critical care section of the anesthesiology department). He seems very nice and welcomed future EM applicants. His name is Todd Dorman. Haven't heard much about the new fellowship director.

I was in an applicants' meeting last month with the PD during which someone asked him point-blank about the format, and he told us it is still 1-3 with the option of a fast-track 4th year and something about a longitudinal fellowship (where you are doing parts of your fellowship in 1-3 and the 4th is just fellowship). He didn't go into a lot of details but he was pretty unequivocal that it is still 1-3. Niner, have you heard otherwise this month?

See above - Niner would know best as he is currently there.

Spoke about this with the Hopkins program director while at ACEP last weekend... He stated Hopkins is remaining 1-3.

This is correct - as of 6 days ago, the RRC has not given approval for a change to a 1-4 year format this year. As such, we will remain a 1-3 program. Fellowships are available in any format you wish and they can be arranged longitudinally if you finish them at Hopkins...
