Well, I did not interview at University of Maryland, but, I did interview at Hopkins, so I can give my input on that program. Overall, JH is a wonderful program. I have no doubt that you would come out of that program an excellent psychiatrist and physician (which I'm sure was emphasized when you interviewed there). It was, at least for me, a very different philosophy than many of the other programs that I interviewed at. For me, it was not a fit, but I think that it is for many other people. Their perspectives (which for those of you who are not aware, include disease, dimension, life story, and I think 2 others that I can't quite remember right now😳), kind of fit with the DSM-IV, but, I was under the impression while I was there that they focus more on these perspectives for diagnosis and treatment. That being said, it seems very, very effective. The patients (I think) get excellent care and I think the residents are extremely well educated. I like the Chairman's rounds that they have.
There is also a good bit of emphasis placed on tradition at JH, so, if that is your thing, then I think Hopkins would be a great fit. I personally liked the emphasis on Int. Medicine and the ICU experience, but I know that some people are definitely turned off by that. I do know that you will definitely work hard if you choose Hopkins. Each resident I met made sure to tell me that they worked harder than the hardest working residents, so, make from that what you will...
For me, the biggest negative about JH was the city. Baltimore is a little sketchy, and while cheaper to live in than the Northeast, it still is rather expensive (to me!). And personally, I was a little worried about safety while I was there, BUT, just my impression. Anyway, if you have any other questions about my impressions of Hopkins, feel free to message me! Good luck!
