So do aldosterone and ADH work together. from my understanding they both make the urine more concentrated. With ADH this is done by aquaporins and with aldosterone it has to do with 3 Na being pumped out and 2 K being pumped in. Any further explanation would be great.

The focus is not on the concentration of the urine, rather the Na+/water concentration in the body.

ADH increases the amount of H2O in the body by making the tubule more permeable to water.

Aldosterone increases the amount of H2O and Na+ by active transport of Na, followed by osmosis.

please correct if wrong...

I am not sure if they work together, its probably good to know that aldosterone is a steroid hormone and ADH is a peptide hormone...aldosterone usually works with renin...renin-angiotensin complex that arises when the blood pressure is low...the kidney secretes renin which stimulates aldosterone release from the adrenal cortex...it increases the water reabsorbtion in the distal convoluted tubule as well as the collecting duct...it also increases the Na+ absorbtion and releases K+...

i think it would make sense that it increases Na+ concentrations because if you think about it incrasing Na+ at the ascending loop into the interstitial tissues would increase the water reabsorption when the urine reaches the collecting duct...therefore the interstitial tissue in the medulla will be highly hyperosmotic compared to the collecting duct and water will flow out of the collecting duct...

Are you asking how they relate? From what I think, aldosterone basicly kicks in with blood volume decreases to increase blood volume. And ADH pretty much increases blood volume. So I think they do the same thing..except Sodium isn't involved with ADH?
