Does anyone know of some good places to board horses in or around Ames? They can be big facilities or small private places...I just want somewhere that takes good care of the horses.

I was casually looking as well. I'm leaving my guy here for at least the first semester until I see how much money/time I can spare, and if I can find a cheap place, and then hopefully bringing him out.

These are the big places I found close to Ames just by googling:
www.canterbrooke.com
www.stagecoach-stables.com
Baker's Acres Horse Boarding 515-232-3114

I'm looking for more of a small private place, maybe with partial care. I just need cheap (as long as it's safe). But I think that is much easier to do once you are in the area, because most of those places are found through contacts.

I finally found a terrific private place near my undergrad this past year - but it took me 4 years of building up contacts and searching to find it. The other years I had him at large public places where I worked off as much board as I could.

ETA: You could always try contacting Brenda to see if she knows anything. I'm sure lots of vet students have been through this before, and they may have even compiled a list of local boarding places.

That's a good point! I am going to look at those bigger facilities when I'm out visiting...I completely know what you mean about the cost though-I just really don't have any other options than to bring the horses with me. I was hoping maybe someone on SDN knew of some more private places. The thing that might be good about a bigger boarding facility is that I will hopefully be able to lease out my schoolmaster and help cover his cost...my young/project horse that I acquired is supposed to be a resale (got him a few years ago), but there is not much of a market.

I would also check with KMJ equine. They're just south of Ames a couple of miles and had nice facilities and what seemed like a lot of room. I bought a dog from them last year and they seem like nice people. I'm not sure if they board but it would be worth a try.

I'm lucky in that I reached an agreement with my current boarding place (also where I learned to ride so lots of history there) where they will keep him and use him until I figure out a way to bring him to Iowa with me. So far he's been doing great so keep your fingers crossed! I'm sure you won't have any problem with your schoolmaster... I would even try mentioning it to the barns when you go visit to see if they'd be interested.

Let me know if you find anything promising and I'll do the same! Good luck, I know what a pain it is to relocate your horses... I've done it every year for the past 5 years. No place is perfect but you just have to find somewhere that fits best with your priorities, you know?

I know the Penn Equine Club put together a list of boarding facilities they've had good luck with up near Philadelphia. See if you can find out who the pres is of the equine club at the vet school (or even undergrad) and see if they've got a similar list.

You might also consider putting an add up on the Ames craigslist under the "Farm/Garden" section. I did that for Corvallis and have gotten several responses so far, some which seem to be right in line with what I'm looking for. I haven't gone to check any out yet b/c I'm working on finding a place for myself first!

That's a great idea, I had looked there for boarding options, but I hadn't thought of posted a 'wanted' ad myself. Thanks!
