Horse dentist??

So the equine dentist came out to the barn today to do my horse's teeth. Has anyone ever seen a "floating"? Pretty interesting...usually they sedate, but this guy is apparently the "horse whispering dentist" and there was no need. He basically had a bunch of huge files and rasped down his teeth. Imagine working on a person with your arm up to the elbow in their mouth!

Anywho...that made me think. Well if this doesn't work out then I can always go to horse dental school hahaha 😀 😱😱

Were you tempted to ask him if he treated gift horses?

(I'm sure he gets that joke a lot, though...)

Oh yes! My horse has had this done before as well. It is interesting to watch, but the sound....like nails on a chalkboard!🙂

I thought you had to go to vet school for it too, but apparently to be an equine dentist you just have to take classes and get a certification.

Really? I love animals, and I would love to work on their teeth! I've brought it up to a few people, and they either look at me weird or they tell me that dentistry for animals is a vet specialty, which I already knew. But, I have also heard of people dentists doing complex root canals on (non-human) animals. Does anyone have any information on this?

If you end up in the military, I'm certain you will have a chance to treat military working dogs (they are worth more than humans.) When I was in I made two full gold canine teeth on two different occasions that military dentists ordered from our lab.

The last case that came in, both lower canines were completely broken down and the only good way to do this is by taking measurment of the contralateral tooth and going from there. By not having the 'opposite' tooth as a go-by I told them I couldn't just wing it. A vet's assistant brought the dog to the clinic and gave him general anestetic, and they just went through the full endo treatment. I can't see whey any dentist isn't qualified to do this especially if it is just treating infection.

For horses, there is also a two week course in FL to earn your CDTeq for the technician types around here.

In the 90s my dad did some dental work on a police dog. I don't have the specifics, but he doesn't have any special qualifications.
