I was curious...what does one do to go on the path of becoming a hospital CEO...based on what i read, it seems that hospital ceos are split 60-70% non-MDs and the other MDs...furthermore I realize its geared more on the business/managerial end side and less focused on the clinical practitioner side; connections, networking, and work experience are thus extremely vital.

For someone who is interested, such as myself..I will be starting work at a top 15 MD/MBA combined degree program, will try to do internships in hospital administration throughout my 5 years and eventually do residency. But what next? I am simply not sure of the credentials/nature of experiences one needs to reach that CEO destination.

Thanks!

If you want to be a hospital administrator, get a business degree and start working in hospital administration. Med school is a waste of time if you want to run hospitals.

I would think a law degree and MBA would help more than an MD if you want to run a hospital.

Agreed. Most hospital CEOs think like businessmen, not like doctors. It's hard to have a medical practice and significant (i.e. high-level) administrative duties and would undoubtedly take much longer to reach CEO level via the MD route.

Most MDs in administration are on the patient care side (dept chairs, deans, committees, public relations, etc.) and not on the business side (finance, HR, legal, etc.).
