I'm in the middle of applying to gpr programs and am currently looking at hospital dentistry as my career after my residency.
Does anyone here know the job/salary prospects for hospital dentistry? Most importantly, do these jobs exist in good numbers for new grads in the nyc area?
Hospital dentistry attracts me because 1) you don't have the stress of working under an owner dentist 2) its income appears to be fair, although fixed 3) hospitals provide greater job security than associate positions
Personal Flashback: I always wanted to be a general dentist who can do a variety of procedures but I don't prefer to go thru that route ever again. It's been a long time since I graduated from dental school and, after passing my NERB exam, I remember having worked for a dentist who wouldn't allow me to do certain procedures. I wasn't even booked for half of the time and all I ever did were extractions, sc/rp, and operatives. The pay also sucked, so I ended up quiting. All other associate jobs I found afterwards were more or less the same, and so I stopped looking for dental jobs altogether and stayed home. ( All of this was in nyc. I often heard how dentists do better outside of the nyc area but I never had the opportunity to verify this because I wasn't permitted to leave the city anyway )
I'm trying to get back into dentistry again. Again, I still want to be a general dentist who can do all sorts of procedures but it appears that the nyc area now has even fewer opportunities for dental associates than when I graduated from dental school. So I'm trying to it a go with hospital dentistry in the same city. My best choice would be to try general dentistry away from nyc, maybe in the midwest. But again, I'm not allowed. Even if I was allowed, I don't know how I can even survive in a place that I never even set foot in.
I would appreciate feedback from those knowledgable about hospital dentistry.
