Hi all,

While I know that there have been SEVERAL posts on intern pay, I haven't found any relating to hospital pharmacy.

I am going into my P2 year and have just started as an inpatient pharmacy intern at a major hospital in a large Northeast city (not in New York, though). I've accepted $15/hour but, as I didn't negotiate, I have a fear in the pit of my stomach that I may have been low-balled :scared:.

What is a reasonable pay for someone in my position? I didn't really have much experience before, though I'd held a pharm tech certification at one point.

Thanks for any replies🙂

A major hospital in large Northeast city should pay P2 interns about $22 to $24 per hour.

HTH. 👍

I got a raise to $15.20 the summer before my 3rd year, all interns malke that at my hospital.

Z, I don't know about that. A P2 who hasn't even had therapeutics being paid that much? In some hospitals P1/P2 interns pretty much just tech without doing much else so they're not gonna pay them close to what a grad intern will make.

Unless of course it's one of the 'prestigious' boston hospitals then maybe b/c of cost of living.

Shhhhhhhhh... c'mon. The op who has no experience but getting paid 15 bucks feels he got the raw end of the deal when some career techs are getting paid 13 per hour... He deserves moar!!! damn it he's a pharmd candidate!

as Z has said, i don't think you have been low balled. Heres why.

1. you got a hospital job, there are fewer hospital jobs out there and the experience is worth it. Theres certainly not enough of these jobs for those who are interested in my class.

2. hospitals usually pay more then the retail jobs. I know my pay was higher and it seems to be the case with my friends who work at other hospitals

3. IV training and real compounding happens. You become proficient in that.

4. You see drugs you never will see in retail in a million years.

5. You will be burned out in retail in a few months. No one likes being insurance experts and the narcotic police.

Exception to the rule and count your blessing.

Sheese.....10 years ago I was hired as an intern at a hospital in KC. I started the summer before my P1 year and made $13.32 an hour and got full benefits.

Thanks to all of you who have responded. I really do feel much better. I was THRILLED to get the position as I'd been trying to get experience in a hospital for a few years now. I just didn't want to feel like others of similar background and experiecne were being treated differently than I. Now, I feel more confident that this is not the case.

Thanks again 🙂
