I'm a P1 right now, with no work experience in pharmacy. I was just wondering how difficult you all thought it would be for someone with no experience to obtain a hospital intern/tech job the summer after their P1 year. Thanks for any input.

Always hard to judge how hard it will be to get a job when you're not in the market yourself.

You might try to apply as a volunteer in the pharmacy first - just to obtain some exposure. Then, if you like it....you might inquire about job opportunities available. You may need to be willing to take vacation coverage for techs or something....but its a start. But...you need to give them a reason to want to invest their money & time on you. Training you is expensive, especially if you only want 2 months of summer work.

Zpack could give you info on how much budget allowance there is for interns. In my area, sometimes there was money, sometimes there wasn't. I also know of one hospital where intern money comes from a different "payroll pot" so to speak than the regular payroll.

Just some ideas.....

I can use Interns in place of PRN Pharm Techs. So, it's difficult for me to say what the budget is. I could probably use a Full time Intern during the summer and maybe every weekend.

That being said, when I was a P1, I desperately needed a job. And I knew I wanted to be in a hospital. So I got out the Yellow Pages and went down the list of hospitals and started to call each Directors. I didn't want to talk to anyone in the pharmacy except for the person doing the hiring.

By the time I got to C... I got hired. Childrens in LA. I told the director, "sir.. I'm a P1, very poor, willing to work every weekend and what I lack in experience, I'll make it up with effort." He hired me over the phone, right then.

Thanks both of you for the tips. Just to clarify what I orginally said, I am planning on starting work this summer, but I will continue part time during the school year. I just didn't want to work during my first year in pharm school. Thanks again for the help.

I walked into a hospital and asked the director for a job and he gave me one on the spot before my P1 year and I had no pharm experience except for the fact that I had an acceptance letter from a pharm school.

Try right after the beginning of May when some Pharm Interns graduate and become pharmacists. That's what I did. There were two openings.

Good luck!

That is cool! 👍

Where I'm originally from there is a great lack of people with any sort of advanced education or intellectual talent, so getting on at the local hospital was actually quite simple.
