I'm going to be shadowing in a department that requires me to wear the hospital scrubs. I am a pretty small female though, and I'm literally swimming in a S. I can usually do well with nursing scrubs (because they cut them smaller for women, and have XS or XXS), but the unisex ones...I'm outta luck.

Is this really something that I'm going to be putting up with for the rest of my life? Has anyone with personal experience (scrubs too big/small/short) had any luck in being able to wear their own scrubs eventually or maybe getting them to order some in special sizes?

I'm not really complaining, I guess I'm just really surprised that since they're providing a required uniform, that they don't come in sizes to fit everyone.

Yeah, the unisex scrubs really aren't built for smaller women, so you will be hitting this problem for a while. And women's scrubs at the hospital are funny looking on top of the fact that they have elastic waists. 👎 Anyway, the good news is that you don't always have to wear the hospital scrubs. Lots of people on lots of services wear their own scrubs.

I guess if it really bothers you, you could try to snag a couple of scrubs to take home and alter.

My hospital has scrub machines, so I'm annoyed that I can't pick and choose my sizes. I have to go with a medium, so I don't show too much cleavage with the large tops, and then the medium pants are way too short, so it looks like I'm wearing high waters. It's hot. 🙄

Yup. It's not just you though. Unless I exert a lot of focus and attention into tying my drawstring I end up showing a large portion of my gluteus maximus.

unisex scrubs or unifat scrubs?

I love that large = extra extra large waistline and extra large = hippo.

Not all of us are shaped like freaking blimps.

I like my low-cut scrubs to sport some cleavage.

I guess that isn't much of a problem in Mexico because unless you're an intern or a resident that's going to surgery in the next 10 minutes you'll never, ever see someone wearing scrubs.
The trauma team up here always wears scrubs - in clinic, in lecture, on rounds, in the OR, and in the trauma bay. It was pretty sweet.

Keep in mind that they are always going to have more average sizes than XXS. The hospital is going to have sizes that will fit the majority of those wearing the scrubs. XXS is not a common size, so naturally they aren't going to accomodate you. Unless you plan on going into whatever you're rotating on at the moment, you'll just have to suck it up for your time there.

Unless you are scrubbing in surgery, most places allow you to wear your own purchased "scrubs". There are plenty of people from environmental services to nursing that wear personal "scrubs". Go to a uniform store and purchase some or order on line.

If you are operating, you have to wear scrub attire from the hospital. Most hospitals do not allow outside scrubs past the red line in the OR. If you are going to be in surgery, pick the size closest to your actual size and "suck it up". It's far better to have scrubs that are too large than too small. If you are worried about "showing too much cleavage" wear a tank or sports bra under your scrubs.
