Hello,

I recently left my position as a Pharmacy technician after a year and a half due to school and wanted to expand my experience in a hospital setting. Could you let me know what's the usual process of getting a position at a hospital pharmacy as an Intern or Technician?

I know in retail, it's usually apply online, and then stop by the store to let the PIC know you applied and drop off some letters of recommendation. Is it the same way to get a hospital internship?

When I looked online, I didn't see any open Pharm Intern openings at nearby hospitals, so my main concern is that the pharmacy isn't actively looking for any positions. Does anybody have any tips on how to get the position by going the extra mile? I know in retail it definitely helps to get some face time with both customers and the PIC after you've submitted your application, and drop off some LORs.
Any tips for going the extra mile when it comes to applying for a hospital position?

Cold calls. This is assuming that you have absolutely no contacts who can help you. Break out the phone book and start making those calls!

Good Luck! 👍

I am finding that most hospital pharmacist jobs require experience as a hospital pharmacist. How do you get that initial experience?

I got both of my internships through networking. Neither of them were posted online. If you find out something is available, don't want until the next day, make it happen right away. The way things are going, experience is going to invaluable IMHO. I'm rocking two internships to develop an extremely marketable resume for the future. It's going to be a tough go working this much - but I'm hoping it will pay off...

On the last time I spoke to a preceptor in an inpatient setting, she told me that they don't always list available positions online, so it's best to check with the director or a staff pharmacist. If you talk to them in person, they'll remember your name and what you look like. That might work better than just leaving them a voice + name, or an email + name.

If they can recognize you when they see you again, that might work better.

I went to the hospital I wanted to work at in person and asked if they could use me. I brought a resume with me and got hired that day.

Most importantly, I went there at the beginning/middle of May when the interns that just graduated had left so there were several openings.

Nothing beats going in person.

Thanks a lot for the replies. This forum is such a great source of info.
I'm just going to head over to the 2 hospitals with open positions that I saw and drop off my LORs and talk with Pharmacy manager if they have the time.
Thanks to this forum, I'll probably drive to the 3 other hospitals nearby and do the same just for kicks. =(

Here's to many hours of driving in the next 2 days 😡. At least gas is $2.49
