Hi everyone,

I'm a third year taking a look into some ortho programs and was wondering if current or past residents can share their experiences in their ortho programs. In particular I was wondering what the differences are between doing an ortho residency in a hospital and school setting. Thank you!

The main different would be Stipend vs Tuition I think.

Yes. Without stating the obvious ... the stipend is an amazing benefit. This usually comes with the hospital programs. The other plus with hospital programs is that as an employee ... you get staff housing, parking. This comes in handy in a place like New York City. I was essentially 3rd on call for any dental emergencies at the hospital. 1st call went to the OMS residents. Then GPR. Lastly myself. Luckily in two years ... I was never called upon.

You'll see more craniofacial patients in the hospital programs than your typical state dental colleges. Trust me .... I saw some weird stuff.

No college football team could be considered a negative of the hospital programs.

Does anyone have more insight on the pros/cons of hospital-based programs vs a traditional dental school setting? If you did or didn't apply them, why or why not? Even with just dental schools, my list is around 20 and adding hospital programs will expand it tremendously...

^^ Pro's of the hospital based programs would be the stipend and the patient volume and seeing a variety of cases
Cons of the hospital would be: light didactics and research, very little to no "hand holding". If you are looking for programs to force feed you everything, hospital programs are not for you They are also mostly 3 year programs. St Barnabas ortho residents also take call in the Emergency Department of a level I trauma center.
