Hey hospitalists and those to be,

Do you guys have any experience in part-time hospitalist work? If the ED docs can do 3 shifts a week how come we can't to?

Does this concept really exist? Is it easier to arrange for nocturnists?

Part of the probelem would likely be the practice set-up. Hospitalists are scheduled weekly per normal, and there is a certain amount of continuity involved, so it's a bit different than the ED where you can just come and go.

Plus, you're already working part-time as a hospitalist.

You could easily find gigs covering weekends and nights if you wanted to be EVEN more part-time.

My hospital system actually does do "part time" hospitalist work.

The full-time hospitalists do 7A to 7P, 7 days on, 7 days off.

If you work part time, you still work 7 days on, 7 days off. But, you work either 7A to 1P, or 1P to 7P. Which, for all intents and purposes, works out to the AM person rounding on everyone, and the PM person doing admissions.

There are some part time hospitalist gigs, but instead of doing 7 on 7 off, they may do 7 on and 3 weeks off, so they work half the time the regular hospitalists work. It works if there is more than one part timer in the group so together they can work the amount of one full timer.

LoudBark: tough gig to get? Could you get it a desirable place? Not necessarily talking NYC or LA, but another good American city? Also: does pay scale linearly? i.e. if a FT hosp makes 250k, would this job make 125?

Well I did my medicine Sub-I in the Boston Area...and I know for a fact hospitalists worked 7 on 7 off, and got paid 180K. I heard that if you're in a downtown Boston hospital, only expect 160K....

So I'm guessing part-time in the Northeast you can't expect more than 80Kish...but I could be wrong.

I actually know more PT hospitalists than FT ones. Most of the people I know doing hospitalist work are .5 to .75 FTE. These jobs are in mostly community and HMO positions.

Also, our VA considers FT as a nocturnist to be 10 shifts a month, which pays in the $175k range including gummint benes. Some folks do 10 straight and take the next 3 weeks off, others split it up in 3-7 day chunks.

My program has a relatively sizable number of part time hospitalists - ranging from 0.6 - 0.8 FTE. I'm not sure about currently but often in the past we have specifically wanted applicants for part time positions but most of the applicants tend to want full time.
