Hospital bullies take a toll on patient safety

Bad behavior by doctors and others undercuts morale, leads to errors

Starting in January, the agency will require hospitals to establish codes of conduct that define inappropriate behaviors and create plans for dealing with them. Suggested actions include better systems to detect and deter unprofessional behavior; more civil responses to patients and families who witness bad acts; and overall training in “basic business etiquette,” including phone skills and people skills for all employees.

Will this start to delay the 3 am phone calls from nurses to residents about things that could wait until morning, or will it simply be another tool used to tell physicians that any criticism of any other employee will be met with the axe of politicial correctness? Only time will tell, but I'm not optimistic.

Maybe there should be a patient code of conduct as well?

Doctors are the only people that are expected to tolerate abuse on the part of those they are servicing.
