Stupid question, but do residency programs usually pay for interviews? I know of one that does, but it's a very noncompetitive program. So, assuming the major ones don't, any tips on finding good hotels in those areas? Any hotels offer discounts? Long shot, but if they offer discounts for CS exam. . .

No programs have mentioned paying for (or even contributing towards!) any of my interviews. My plan was to try to stay with friends or friends of friends whenever possible to minimize $.

(I am very glad I have chosen psychiatry, but the other specialty I was deciding between it seemed like most of the programs paid for hotel rooms for interviewees. Maybe doesn't speak well for how lucrative psych is...?)

Depends on the program. Most don't, though are willing to give information & reccomendations on places to stay. Some may offer to pick you up from a cab if you're at a hotel.

Its completely up to that program.

Just out of curiosity, which program are you referring to (that's fotting the bill)?

There was a website, interviewtrail.com, I think, that let you link up with others interviewing in the same city on the same day so you could share a room/ride/whatever. Came about way after my time on the trail, so I can't vouch for it.

For medical school it was frequently an option to request to stay with another student for 1 night. Is that an option to do with residency interviews? Am I allowed to ask the coordinator who arranges the interviews?

I don't want to seem cheap/sketchy if this is not "professional" but frankly I'm poor and the $ of airline tickets is adding up...

Most programs I interviewed at had this option (e.g., "check this box if you would like to be housed with a resident"). If it isn't made explicit, it doesn't hurt to ask. Just call up the program coordinator and ask.

-AT.

most of the programs i interviewed at in '06-07 did not contribute.

SUNY Upstate helped pay for the hotel.
Wichita paid for 2 nights!
Virginia did not help.
Hartford Hospital has a dorm room.
Yale offered to let you stay with a resident if possible.
