Hi there,

I am a current 2nd year medical student interested in EM. I would like to know how many hours a week you generally work. I have heard that EM is good on one's social life as it allows flexibility in how you arrange your schedule.

Thanks!

The really tough weeks I work 140 hours.
Theres another doctor that works 168. His name begins with Fat or something. Maybe someone else can help me with the name.

Oh I know that guy. he's a ridiculous machine. last name's Mc-something.

I don't believe that you can work 140 hours. You're saying that week, you have only 28 hours of time to sleep, eat, and hygiene? I'm sorry, you must be lying.

Basically, they're saying read the FAQs or do a search because the question has been asked multiple times. 🙂

But in a much funnier way.

Residents work 60 hrs/ week in the ED.
Attendings work closer to what GV says, 150/hrs a month for full time. 8-12 hour shifts on average.

Wow, med school must have been like vacation for you then 😛

I'm just finishing 1st year but thus far in terms of exhaustion and stress my worst day here was typically an average day prior to school. Don't get me wrong, school is tough, but its not the same as working.

I actually thought the classroom work was miserable. I'd much rather put in an 80 hour workweek on clinical rotations, than have to sit in a classroom all day every day.

Our lecture attendance was not mandatory, thus, zero to no classroom time for me. I spent most of my days at a coffeeshop chatting and reading. It was vacation-like after my real job.

same here--despite the volume of material to memorize, it was a great couple of years

This is how I feel actually. I was tired a lot but I worked all those hours because I wanted to, didn't have to. I was just saying in terms of how tired I am now-a-days doesn't even compare to when I was working.

I can't wait to get out of the class room and go back to 80+ hours a week
