Hi guys,

I'm going to be a PGY1 at Maryland in July. I've been debating renting vs buying -- and b/c I want to be very close to the univ of maryland med center hospital -- I am thinking buying may be too expensive (although I have not totally ruled it out) and am looking more at renting (am flying up there in about a week to check out housing)

my quesiton: what are some good apartments/condos/townhouses VERY CLOSE to univ of maryland ? I know the various neighborhoods - and I have looked at some of the "luxury" apartments (symphony apartment, the atrium, etc) does anyone on here live in any of these apartments -- what do you think about them etc?

I want a nice place but also w/in 1-3 miles of the hospital ( at least 2/3 I will be rotating through)

nextttttttttttttttt step: does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a roommate in a town you are completly new to???? cuz I'm going to need one.

Most Universities have housing offices that you can tap into for local housing and roommate lists. Taking a look at UMD at Baltimore, I found this link:
http://www.housing.umaryland.edu/ and you might get started on your search.

Hi there. I'm a pgy4 in psych at univ. Welcome.

First, try www.craigslist.com (click baltimore, then apts/housing) to find a place close to Univ of MD also have TONS of roommate listings, as well try roommate.com too. expect to pay 600-750 for a nice roommate place and you will be happy.

The closest "real" neighborhood would be Rigley's Delight which is adjacent to the campus. My experience has been that people who chose to live in the apt blds (all of them) adjacent to the univ at times feel like prisioners in their environment b/c after a certain time of night, downtown b-more is a ghost town, and walking home at 6-7pm even is a bit scary to them and they regret moving there. Of course a shuttle is available, but not w/o a 30-45min wait. Now as far as i know, nothing bad has happened "recently", but the neighborhood around university is busy with medical folks during the day, and deserted at night.

Now if i were you, i'd look at places in Mt. Vernon ($$ location of symphony apts), Federal Hill($$$), Canton ($$$$), or Fells Point ($$) all of which are a short drive/bike, but they have awesome aneneties i.e. young professional crowd, nice markets, H20 views, awesome public library, tons of bars with grea party nights, all just a better cultural experience, i.e. the REAL baltimore that people boast about when others bash the ghettofabulous parts of the city (lexington market area).

Hope this helps 🙂

I'm in the same boat (PGY-1 at U of Md) and utterly unfamiliar with the area. I actually registered with "roommates.com" because I finally came to terms with the fact that the only apartments I can afford in Baltimore City might land me in a trauma bay.

Plus, I couldn't reconcile paying $900/month for an apartment without washer/dryer connections when I'm never really going to be there anyway. Hence, the roommate.

I'm actually heading up to Baltimore next Thursday to look around and meet a potential roommate. If it works out, I would be living in the northeast part of Baltimore. (The other thing I had to come to terms with...a commute.) My cousin married a lawyer who has lived in the area all his life, so I'll talk with him and report back if you'd like.

There are a lot of apartments within walking distance to the hospital, Southern Management (southernmanagement.net) runs a bunch of them and some of them include utilities, but figure on paying around $1000/mo for a 1bd and $1400/mo for a 2bd. These are mostly not in Ridgely's, a little more expensive, somewhat safer due to proximity to the hospital, Oriole Park and the Hippodrome. Otterbein/Federal Hill is on the outside edge of walkable but definitely bikeable, a more lively area with more things to do at night.

Good luck!

There is a large renovation of older buildings near the hospital and the Hippodrome theater. Many of these buildings are condo buildings. Baltimore has not traditionally had a lot of condos in the past but are now appearing in record numbers with the renovations downtown. While many of these units are pricy (high 100's to 200's) and without knowing your financial situation, you may be able to buy then bring in a roommate to help make up the difference to what you would ideally like to pay alone. I think it's actually a great area now and will only be getting better as the renovation of the area continues.

I'm originally from Baltimore, have been here through med school and will be doing my prelim year at Maryland, so feel free to PM me.
